Default Sugar Free ~HOT FUDGE~by smuckers? hmmm

I post so seldom as I am pretty busy, but am a succesful SB'er since March w/ 40 lbs lost. and Occasionaly come here to be inspired by y'all : ) havent posted since last month but when I saw this I thought I'd ask .......

Okay today I saw this passing the Ice cream toppings @ the Grocery store- looks just like the old hot fudge jar, you remember, by Smuckers; "SUGAR FREE HOT FUDGE TOPPING" -- the main ingredient is "glycerine" (??) ugh. makes some kind of claim on the front about fat, but nothing about being "low glycemic" But, in a hot fugde fix, I wonder???????? I know basically- "if you have to ask" its probally not a good idea, but I was envisioning a Tbsp of this on top of Vanilla Ricotta : )

However I have just abandoned all sugar alcohol types things as I was sick of the bloating, so maybe stay away from this too.

Hi, Jessie. I'm glad you're still doing well!

Hmmmm...I don't have access right now to the SBD website to see what their nutritionists would say. I found the ingredients & nutrition facts on the internet, which are always important to carefully read when evaluating a food. I'm no expert, but I colored some things I thought might be important...

-2 TBSP = 90 calories. (Total Daily Sweet Treats are limited to 75-100 calories per day)

-0 grams fat, 0 grams sugar

-18 Grams Sugar Alcohol (I've never before noticed this number listed on a label.)

-Cornstarch is 7th highest ingredient. (I think this being a binder in SF, FF
pudding may be the reason pudding is not allowed until Phase 2, and limited to 1 serving per day.) It could lead to cravings.

Nutrition Facts
Serving Size 2 Tbsp. (38g)
Calories 90

Calories from Fat 0
Amount/Serving %DV *
Total Fat 0g
Saturated Fat 0g

Cholesterol 0mg
Sodium 30mg
Total Carbohydrate 23g
Dietary Fiber 1g

Sugars 0g
Sugar Alcohol 18g

Ingredients
GLYCERIN, WATER, NONFAT MILK, SORBITOL, COCOA, , MALTODEXTRIN, CORN STARCH, CARRAGEENAN, SALT, POTASSIUM SORBATE ADDED AS A PRESERVATIVE, TITANIUM DIOXIDE ADDED FOR COLOR, POLYSORBATE 60, VANILLIN AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR, DISODIUM PHOSPHATE, SODIUM CITRATE, SUCRALOSE A NON NUTRITIVE SWEETENER.

So, if I were evaluating it for myself...

I would first want to see what the nutritionists or Dr. A. would say.

It isn't low in calories. 2 TBSP would equal my calorie limit for Sweet Treats for the entire day.

The corn starch & sugar alcohols could lead to problems. It would be important to carefully watch for cravings. (The bloating & other digestive problems would be hard to ignore, of course.)

For me, it would just be too risky for me to have at home. Sometimes I'd probably have trouble stopping after 1 TBSP. I might even eat the whole jar at a vulnerable time. That would be a whopping amount of calories! And LOTS of digestive problems.

I'll be interested in what others think.

BTW, don't some people make their own chocolate topping??

Yeah, I know what you mean, I kinda dont want it in my house- LOL like, a Tbs wouldnt hurt, but know I would want to have more... and I have had Cravings return recently when I do stuff like that. I was fustrated cause I was craving things and Bloaty too- but In just the last 3 days I've been doing better, after cutting out "questionable" things. Mainly (excessive) sugar alcohols and Coffee- the Caffeine affects me, giving me "highs" and "lows". Its so true that SB is a learning process, and you learn how your body reacts to things. I upped my water and fiber and feel better.

I just found it funny that it said "Glycerine" I mean, I've been reading lables, for , what 6 months now and NEVER seen that!- LOL like, I had thoughts of "nitro- glycerin" isnt that stuff that explodes?? LOL!!!! SO, I guess its best to admit that this IS a franken-food type of thing.

BTW I have come up W/ some JUST AS SATISFYING treats with all the Spices I bought. I plan on posting some Ideas here later- since some others might like it. Like "Apple pie Spice" ( its in with the spices...) + walnuts with Ricotta. YUM!!!!!!!!

thanks!!!! : ) Jessie

Yeah, how about a glycerin topping on your dessert? Mmmmmm!

Looked it up and turns out it IS used for nitroglycerin, as a plasticizer, and as an antifreeze, among lots of other things. :OMG: It shouldn't be consumed undiluted, as it draws water from the tissues. No wonder we get gastric distress! It's listed as a sugar alcohol too.

I'm with you. Not many cravings as long as I stick with whole foods. I used to want the other stuff much more, but now it usually doesn't appeal to me that much. Even caffeine's effect makes it usually not worth it. If I'm tired I drink more water, & don't feel as tired.

Honestly, I think our SBD-friendly treats usually are the best overall!
I would love to learn some of the treat ideas you've come up with. Please post them whenever you can!!
