| Anyone here do yoga on a regular basis? I am going to start again, I was doing it for quite a while and really enjoying it. I was one of those people that used to roll my eyes at people who did yoga thinking it wasn't a workout, till I tried it! For anyone that does, what dvd's do you use, who's your favourite instructor, or do you go to a studio? I have some Rodney Yee DVD's I really like him, and suzanne deason as well, though she can get on my nerves after a while. I bought a Baron Baptist dvd, but that guy is a nutcase I think and i can't follow him. He does yoga wearing a headset microphone, which to me kinda goes against what yogas all about :Sarcastic: LOL. | ||||||||||

| Yoga has been wonderful for me, but time's a problem. I used to do yoga regularly & loved it. I did seem much slimmer from it, too. (I didn't weigh myself.) But now that I'm focused on weight loss/control, & time's so limited, it's hard for me to justify spending the time on it. What benefits do you think it has for our weight goals? | ||||||||||

| I know what you mean. I KNOW that it's REALLY good for me. There's this intangible sense of well-being too, even after one session. I'm sure it would make me alot firmer, which I really need. Also, here's an article I found: http://www.healthfinder.gov/news/new...p?docid=527053 I saw an article too about a cardiac rehab program that focuses on yoga. I'm not ready to make a regular commitment, but I do want to start doing maybe about 15 min a day when I can. I've done it at home. I have "Yoga For The Rest of Us" DVD with Peggy Cappy, which is for older people. That's enough for me right now. And it breaks up into 2 short sessions. Thanks for the idea, Jen! What do you think? | ||||||||||

| I love Yoga but don't have as much time for it as I'd like. I can't remember all of the instructors names but Yoga also has different styles. The style I like best is Bikram yoga. The moves seem more simple. One of the reasons I think Yoga helps with fitness is it works so many muscles that you don't regularly use. When we work out with weights we tend to concentrate more on the front side of the muscles like our quads and pecs. Even though we do triceps and hamstrings, it seems like we have to "remember" to work these muscles. But with Yoga, you are constantly working the backside of your muscles. This helps with posture, balance and evening out toning don't you think? I used to work for a company that offered onsite Yoga classes after work (the owner's girlfriend was a teacher so she taught us in a spare room). We used heaters in the class to warm up our muscles and joints and that made such a big difference. It was great leaving work feeling like your engine was revved instead of the opposite!! There's a great beginner's yoga tape you can buy that was produced by Yoga Journal. I forgot who the instructor is. I use this from time to time. But honestly now that I have herniated disks in my neck and back, I can't to some of the moves anymore. now I'm doing Pilates instead when I can. Good luck getting a good program!! | ||||||||||

| Mindy, That does fit with the results I get. But how can you exercise either the front side or back side of a muscle? | ||||||||||

| I guess I wasn't clear when I said that, sorry! What I mean is that we tend to exercise the muscles located in the front of our limbs and not concentrate as much on the ones in the back. For instance Your quadraceps are muscles in the front of the leg. You can do squats to exercise those. Your hamstrings are muscles in the back of the leg. Notice how sore they get after you've been doing a lot of gardening? That's because we neglect to exercise them as much. Hamstring curls help with these. Yoga tends to really target the muscles in the back side of our bodies, so good to help us with balance and strength and toning!!! | ||||||||||

| Thanks for that info, Mindy. Here's something else I found (not sure how much is true, but it fits for me). That site also has a blurb on yoga/weight loss & other physiological benefits. I like to have back-up that helps me motivate myself. http://yoga.org.nz/benefits/physiolo...dybuilding.htm I did a very short yoga session yesterday. Today my thighs & glute area seem a bit stronger, firmer, & smoother than usual. Already! Love it!!! Last edited by nancy; 05-12-2006 at 11:44 AM. | ||||||||||
