Unhappy Help

I am considering starting south beach this week. My niece has had great success. One of my main concerns is that I am allergic to fruit, which I know will not affect me until after the first two weeks. But I need some sweet alternatives. Please help with this and any advice that you may have for beginners.

Congratulations on taking the step to start this week. No fruit?....well, as you know, this won't effect phase 1...so no reason not to start right?

Sweet treats you can enjoy on phase 2..without fruit...
Any/All the phase 1 dessert suggestions (I can give you these if you don't have them)
Bittersweet or Semisweet chocolate
SF, FF Puddings with cool whip & nuts on top...YUM!!
SF Jello (no fruit, but has the flavoring...can you eat this?)...add cool whip & nuts on top of this...YUMMIER!!!
SF, FF Fudgesicles or popsicles
SBD cookie/snack packs are yummy too...oatmeal raisin, peanutbutter...mmmm

There are tons of ideas for sweets without fruit in them...please don't let this hamper your decision to START this week...your niece is a smart girl...you will see results too if you simply follow the guidelines...allergies or not!

Everyone is different...modify the diet to work for you!...that's the best part about it! Cross the 'fruit issue' bridge when you get to it...don't give up before you even start! Even doing phase 1 for two weeks will be better than doing nothing right?....we can do this...just ask your niece!....Good Luck and I hope I have helped!

Default Sweetners

Tiny T., you seem to know a lot, so I'll ask you. I too am preparing to star SB next week and am allergic to Artificial Sweetners. How will I make it through Phase 1? (Without panic) I already buy the SB Protein bars and cookies which I know I'll be able to partake of in Phase 2 and 3. Help me make it through Phase 1!:OMG:

ahhh...the dreaded artificial sweetner...That stuff is nasty anyhow...lol....it also hinders weight loss if you eat too much. Just what we don't want here huh?

I'm going to tell you that you will be fine...don't panic...there are tons of recipes to make without sugar/sweetner in them what-so-ever...about the only thing that will be effected are the desserts...is that your issue?

Your wondering what things you can enjoy on phase 1 for a 'sweet treat?'....trust me...once you start phase 1, after about the first 5-6 days, you won't even crave those things anymore...phase 1 is no carb/no sugar stage anyhow...so it shouldn't effect you too much until phase 2...by then, your cravings for sweets will be completely different than they are now. You will think a ripe banana is too sweet....strawberries will taste like candy.

Don't let your allergy keep you from changing your life! Start this diet now...why wait till next week? Do you have a menu in mind? Any idea what to eat? I can help you with your menu if you like...Read my journal 'T's Journal' if you like...I've posted many menu examples there...phase 1 & 2...read up a bit and let me know what sounds good...I can help more if you need, but I think you know what your doing...you just gotta do it my friend!

We can do this...let's get this ball rolling!

Red face Menus

I am concerned about the dessert issue the first week. I'm waiting to start until next week because I believe in being informed about the diet before beginning. I've been reading the book, guides, cookbooks, etc. while I purge my kitchen of unwanted items. "Deliver me from temptation." I hope what you say about 5-6 days is correct and I hope that by Phase 2 fruit does taste so sweet. I've been working with a nutritionist since June of last year and I've lost 36lbs. I started at 228lbs and now I'm bouncing back and forth between 193-195lbs. My blood pressure was high as well as my cholestoral and my dad is dying of heart disease at 61 years old. My BMI is down 2 points but I'm still at the dreaded 30 and I want to get down to 150-160lbs into a safe zone where my BMI will not be so bad and I will be less likely to follow in my fathers footsteps. I have been on a plateau for 6 months now and I'm fed up. My Nutritionist couldn't tell me why I can't get past this plateau, just that it would break eventually. Well, while I wait for eventually...I cheat more and more. I've learned more in the South Beach Book about how my body breaks down sugars and fats than I did from my nutritionist. And now I realized all my vegetable and snack choices were high carb. Who knew beets or carrots were high sugar, regardless of natural or not.

I understand completely about being ready and well informed. And I too, had a 'light bulb', so to say, go off in my head after reading the book...carrots...my whole life everyone was telling me to eat carrots!!! And red potatoes are 'better' for you?...HA! They are all evil!!!....Who knew? I wish I could go back 10 years and read this book...I could have gotten a jump start on this thing...lol....even being on and off of it for a few years has tought me some hard lessons about it as well. My initial mistake was the first time I reached my goal, I celebrated w/food...instead of phase 3...duh. Not this time...I can't wait to get to phase 3...I'm getting there...about 30 lbs to go...woo hoo....

Let me know if you need help putting one together..it's kinda confusing what to do once you have it created...let me know if I can help...I think there's another thread about this somewhere...I'll see if I can find it.

Glad to have you at the beach and ready to start. If you have any questions about anything, just let me know! That's why we're all here!
