Default Coming From Atkins

Hi. Just wanted to introduce myself. My name is John and I previously did Atkins from early 2006 - late 2007. It was very successful for me (50lbs) but fell off it when my Mom passed away (stress) and then a couple months later had kidney stones; which I am feelingmay have been contributed to by Atkins.

Anyway, I put the weight back on and wanted to try South Beach since it is a little more carb friendly and hopefully won't have to go through giving birth to kidney stones again

By the way, I have a whole new respect for the ladies that have given birth.

Welcome Buddy Jay! It's great to have you here. I don't know how many members on our board have done Atkins as well but I'm sure there is quite a number here.

South Beach is much more carb friendly, far less restrictive, I think you'll like it.

I am sorry about your mom, when my mom died I went through the same thing and food seemed to be my new best friend.

Make sure to read all the stickies for newbies and check out the recipes section too!

Take care,
Joy

p.s. And those kidney stones? Let's hope that NEVER happens again!

hey i just left the Atkins forum myself...i dont want to say bad things about others..but..wow..lets just say this is my new home...

i got jumped on when i tried to defend someone who said one day they would eat a slice of pizza..

that was a mistake...atkins people by and large think you can never have a "bad" carb..i tried to tell them there is whole grain pizza also ..but even if there wasnt..

its a good thing this is the internet or i would have been hanged...

Welcome to all!! I have seen people get jumped on for "bad" carbs on SB boards too! So it kind of happens everywhere I think! But this particular board is smaller in terms of members currently, so is a lot more personable and friendly I think. And remember SB is much more about the actual ingredients than any type of carb count. I've been eating this way for about 5 years now and I've become an expert ingredients label reader, but generally pay very little attention to the nutritional panel and the amount of carbohydrates I'm consuming. I do try to stick to the 4.5 cups of veggies as a minimum per day, and 2 starch servings and 3-4 fruit servings a day, but that's what works for me and everyone needs to find what works for them which is the beauty of phase 2.

But IF you like to count carbs, I've done some math and if you include all of the dairy and beans you are allowed (cheese is a protein for SB purposes), even in P1 you can get to 80+ carbs per day and I figured out once that in an avg. P2 day I'm somewhere in the 135-150 range. Of course that's a total number since the concept of a "net carb" is completely foreign to SB!!

Everything you said is why I am here. I am going to the Farmers Market, eating fresh veggies and fruits, whole grains and I am loving it!!! This isnt a diet ...this is just eating good food!!

I am not watching carbs that much, I exercise alot and am fairly active....i only weigh once a week...I dont Screw with my mind ya know? If the weight starts going up (which it has not) I would simply cut back just a little, and up the exercise...something Atkins people dont talk about much..exercise..i dont think its that healthy to rely on food intake as the control of weight..eh..anyways...thanks for having this board..look forward to talking with everyone.

hi there, i am also a former atkins follower- i haven't had any bad experiences with a message board though.

i do think this way will be easier for us though- the nuts and beans will be helpfull for me anyway.

i do think atkins does promote exercise- the forums i have been to anyway and the book is pretty clear about it- but then like with everything people think they can make up their own rules.

with regards to your kidney stones- they were probably already in your system before you started atkins- you probably already know that the stones are made up of excess calcium in the system and diet doesn't typically contribute to it- dr.s think it is hereditary.

but good luck to you

I am a former Atkins dieter as well. I have nothing bad to say about Atkins diet; however, I think that the SBD is a more acceptable lifestyle for me. Good luck to you. This is a great way of life and a great board for support.
