Default Hello All...SBD tomorrow

Friday morning is the big day, my wife and I are beginning phase one. We have packed up all the food in the house and will drop it off at my daughter's house before hitting the grocery store for all of the new healthy food. I'm almost ashamed that there is just about nothing in our pantry or fridge that is South Beach friendly; frozen chicken breasts, rolled oats, coffee and tea, that's it. Everything else has to go. I understand the coffee is OK, because I drink it black, I'm hoping un-sweat iced tea is OK too. I do plan on cooking lots of stuff on my grill, so if anyone has anything they want me to test just let me know. I really plan on sticking this thing out, we are not obese, but we are overweight and with old age creeping up on us (we are both in our late 40's) the weight issue is a health issue and with our blood pressure elevated, it has become a painful health issue.

Welcome and best wishes on your SB adventure! How did your first day go??

Just want to make sure you know that you don't have to follow the menus in the book. You might not have to replace everything quite to the extent you are thinking, but then again, maybe you do! You can use the P1 food list and the P1 meal model to put together your own menus with foods that may be more familiar to you and more along your own personal tastes. A bowl of homemade chili with SB friendly ingredients and a side salad with a low sugar dressing is just as valid as some fancy fish dish and the beans will help keep you out of ketosis more and give you more good carbs and energy!

If you have questions along the way, just ask!!

P.S. I didn't start until my late 40s either and I feel 1000 times better in my early 50s than I ever did in my early 40s. The quality of life changes from eating healthier and being active are the real prize in all of this!

Well, the first day went pretty smooth. We bought some "Healthy Choice" frozen dinners to get us buy until I can get into the cooking, they were OK as long as we didn't eat the pasta, or the rice, or the potatoes that come as a side. I have been planning on making a small crockpot full of SB chili, and splitting it up between 3 or four meals; should I use ground chuck or ground turkey?

ground chuck might be too fatty. meats need to be 90% lean or better. Actually some ground turkey meat is fattier than leaner forms of ground beef depending on whether they grind in dark meat or just use turkey breast. So either is fine as long as it's 90/10 or better. Or family actually prefers chunks of meat, so I buy the chicken tender/riblets and chop those up into bite size pieces. You do have to spend time removing the tendon from the middle of them though, so it definitely increases prep time, but is pretty cost effective. If you have chicken (or turkey) breasts available at a good price you can use either of those and cut them up into roughly 1" cubes too.

I made it yesterday with chicken breast, and man was that stuff good. It's hard to believe that it's good for me and delicious. The wife even loved it. I bought some ground sirloin that is 90/10, going to try it tomorrow.

hehehe... With the diversity of foods and flavors available on this program, if people get bored with the food or think it tastes boring, it's really just because they aren't trying or they are so picky about what they eat and unwilling to change that they just end up with the same few items every day.
