The "Starches" category also includes starchy veggies like sweet potato and winter squashes and plenty of grains much closer to their "whole" nature like quinoa, barley, steel cut oats, brown rice and so forth. The more you need to chew, the slower they will digest as well. I know it is so common and easy to think of "whole grains" as either ww (whole wheat) bread or ww pasta, but those are some of the last things I would add back in during the transition process. Even ww flour is still a fairly highly processed form of grain and will have a higher GI than whole grains closer to their whole origins.
The book says "Phase 2 week one" pg 250
"Have one starchy carb and a piece of fruit daily in the first week. Although the fruits can vary and added at any meal we found that to keep cravings at bay, it's best now to have fruit after breakfast the first week. Instead we reccomend eating a slice of whole wheat bread or a serving of high-fiber cereal with your egg in the morning" It also states in the previous paragraph though "they have thought to have the carbs compression in a 2 week introduction but depending how you do with the cravings and weightloss you made decide to do them more slowly."
I remember starting out slowly the first time around but I went straight for the bread after a couple of days and though I lost weight I think it was not done properly. Maybe if I did it properly I would not have had cravings when things went haywire and I quit the program. I really don't know why they changed their ways unless in the new book he really emphasizes exercise and he is thinking more carbs are needed? I'm really not sure.

My third day on phase 2 and so far things are going smoothly. I pretty much have been staying on phase 1 other than adding a piece of fruit. Yesterday I had an apple with laughing cow cheese wedge and I felt like it was so indulgent. Yum, god bless the person who created laughing cow cheese! The weight has been staying the same since friday and I really wish I wasn't so obsessive with the scale but I've always weighed myself daily just to keep myself in check instead of waiting a week to see if I'm eating too many carbs ect. Have a good day everyone!

FWIW, you may find this article interesting. Dr. Weil is not a SB-er, but he is an advocate for healthy eating in general, although he does differ from Dr. A in places as well. But this articly just makes a lot of sense to me based on what I have observed with others over the years. Ask Dr. Weil: Whole grains, not whole-wheat flour, best for level blood sugar | Chew on this

Today is my fourth day on phase 2 and it really is going very smoothly. Today I had a 1/2 cup steel cut oats for breakfast and loved it. I mixed my yogurt with it and I did not have any cravings later in the day. I'm down
12.4 lbs now and I really am feeling good. I think as far as turkey day goes I will be okay because I plan on making a few items that are very south beach so temptation does not strike. I am morely looking forward to black friday when I shall SHOP TIL i DROP!!! iI love the christmas season and preparing for it and baking has always been a big event in my house. This year I ordered cookies to come on dec 23 from a local chef that makes the most awesome cookies Dh is a new diabetic and I think our whole household needs to reform so he will stay on track to keep his sugar under control The next 4 weeks should be interesting in how well I can resist the goodies that will be coming by my way and find out how strong my will power and WANT POWER IS..

:Morning:I haven't posted for a few days. I think one post by one member said "do we not post when we are feeling guilt?" That is a really good question. I think the answer is yes for me at least with posting in this journal. I'm up two pounds so I really am not happy with that. The chinese that dh had to have and though I tried to choose as careful as possible plus with the pumpkin pie put I'm determined to lose another 5lbs this month, not a big loss but enough to keep me in the right mindset. I know once the holidays are over it will become much easier for me. A friend of mine once told me that "weightloss is 90% in your head, it's a question of how bad you want it and how you can train yourself to deny your weakest temptations." I really do agree with that so back to the basics for me today. I plan on doing what I call a phase 1.5 where I allow myself some fruits(2), no grains such as rice, bread ect. Exercise has been close to nil since I started and today I'm starting my cpt5k program(couch potato to 5k). It worked very well fro me when I did it 2 years ago and plan on incorporating back into my plan.

I need to up my exercise! I could only do 15 min on my treadmill yesterday. Which really bummed me out. I was talking with my friend about how out of shape I am and she gave me a swift kick in the butt that I needed. She reminded me I used to be a marine for goodness sakes and I ran in the marine corp marathon in 1983-1987. I never achieved any top ten placement but I finished the dang thing, granted I was in my early twenties and in the best shape of my life. I don't want to run a marathon but my daughter convinced me to do a 5 k and I signed up for one last night in my area for march 28 2009. That gives me roughly 16 weeks. My dh thinks I am pushing myself too much, but I have to, this is really important to me.
So today I got up and went for a brisk walk/run in 28 degree weather with the snow falling so hard I could barely see at times. I really felt invigorated! I went 3 miles in under an hour with lots of hills. It is not the greatest feat considering it was mostly walking with a little jogging in between but I went out and pushed myself to do it. It is going to take some time before I can be running full capacity but before march 1 I am going to be doing it. I really don't care if I come in last as long as I finish. I think the treadmill just is boring for me and I need to try to exercise every day that i can. I won't punish myself if it doesn't happen on a daily basis, somedays it will be impossible. I am working a 16 hour shift on thurs and saturday for a friend at work so those days it won't be happening but on days I can I will push myself.

I haven't posted for a few days, we lost our internet due to an ice storm over the weekend. The only way i could be on here was at work but we have been so busy with the mad rush of the holidays I barely had time to post the challenge thread. I took this week off so I could get some holiday things done, like get my decorating and tree up and finish some shopping. I have not been able to exersize due to working doubles at work, many people out with the flu but I will try to get in at least 30 min every day for the next week.

Today is my birthday! Dh is taking me out to texas roadhouse, my fav spot and don't plan on indulging except for having a small steak with the sweet potato served plain. I've gotten to the point where I can eat just about anyting plain without the butter, sugar. Dh is buying a cake but if I do have a piece it will be extremely small. I'm down to almost 15 lbs(weight 224.9) which i think is pretty good considering all the goodies lying around the breakroom.
As a birthday gift to myself I joined a health club near the hospital yesterday on my lunch break. They have a track, state of the art fitness center, personal trainers and a pool. I signed up for 2 classes that start in january. One is a "train for a 5k" which fits in with my training and a yoga class. I know several members are into yoga on here. The new class does not start til feb, I did not want to join one midway through so I am willing to wait.

I had a really great birthday! I did go over my calorie limit but think I stayed in the guidelines pretty well. I had a house salad with lemon juice, A 6- 0z steak(1/2 of a 12 0z) and ended up not getting a sweet potato because they ran out. They did not tell me til I was half way through the dinner. They felt bad and I think they really wanted me to take a baked potato but told them to bring another salad since they seemed they did not want to take it off the bill. I will have that salad with the rest of my steak for either lunch or my dinner tonight. Did I mention the margarita? I had to have a margarita and It was delish. They have huge ones but I was wishing I had taken some kind of grain earlier in the day because I was feeling it on the way home. I remember that for next time. I was never an alcohol drinker other than having some wine at dinner but found drinks do impair me alot more than before. I did not have the cake, had some low sugar frozen yogurt instead. I'm not sure if it was in the sb guidelines but having no cravings today.

I was not expecting much for the birthday, dh just got a big loan to expand our barn and this week with joining the health club and I told him that would be my gift. He got me a IPOD! I never had an mp3 player so I'm still learning how to use it. I did download some of leslie sansones walking dvd's on it. She is like a celebrity in our area, she lives about 20min from here. Newcastle, pa is her home town and a friend of mine used to work for her before she got big at her fitness club. I never met her myself but it seems everyone around here is into leslie. I have read her books and they are quite informative and very helpful.
I did get on the scale being the scale obsessive person I am and it basically is the same, give or take a couple of ounces which I was thrilled with. Now I off for my 3 mile walk with my new toy!!
