| The South Beach stance is that caffeine makes you hungry by triggering a rise, followed by a sharp fall, in blood sugar levels. Recent reports also suggest that caffeine raises both blood sugar and insulin levels. This leads to temporary signs of a condition called insulin resistance. As well as making weight loss more difficult, some experts believe that insulin resistance increases your risk of both heart disease and type II diabetes. For the above reasons, SB limits caffeine drinks to no more than 16 ozs. per day. I'm not a big coffee drinker myself, and when I do drink it, I use decaf. More than one cup of the regular stuff makes my head feel like it's exploding. Maybe some coffee drinkers will come along and give you their observations about coffee drinking. | |||||||||||

| I'll be the first to admit my favorite thing to wake up to is a good cup of coffee (I have a stove top espresso machine!). Knowing that I would have a limited caffine intake on SB I was a little nervous about even trying. So, here's my story as to how I survived ... the Sunday night before I was going to begin SB I went to the grocery store and got things that I would need. I already checked out and was putting my groceries in the car when I realised I was completely out of coffee (I get fine ground coffee beans). So I ran back in grabbed one and was on my way. I got up everyday for the first week and made my coffee with breakfast and went on my merry little way ... the first 4-5 days I found that I was a little extra sleepy in the morning at work but I eventually woke up and was fine. On Saturday (day 6) I had a nice little sleep in and had more time to make breakfast and enjoy it. As I was making my "usual" cup of coffee I discovered my most hated words on the front of my coffee packet .... DECAF!!!!! I couldn't help but laugh at myself! So I accidently tricked myself to decaffinate! Interestingly on Sunday I made a caffinated coffee and I had an insane buzz from less than half the amount of what I used to drink. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/kitchen/444-ok-coffee-what-big-deal.html So this week at work I have had a little more caffine after my discovery and i actually feel like my weight loss has stopped or I may have even put some on .... needless to say I'm going back to decaf! | ||||||||||

| OMG! That's a funny story! I actually prefer decaf coffee. Regular gives me an upset stomach and I need an acid reflux pill. If I have more than one cup it feels like my head is going to explode! | |||||||||||
