    Default legal cold cereals

    hello gang,

today i am starting phase 2!!!! i am a lover of cold cereal, but in the sb books, it just say "low sugar high fiber" cereals. does anyone have any suggestions on the best ones to get. I already know about uncle sam, but i would love to maybe mix it with something else.

I used to mix uncle sam's with Kashi Go Lean. (not the KGL crunch version which is too high in sugars for SB worthiness.)

The original cold cereal guidelines were 8 gms of fiber or more and 8 gms or fewer of sugars per serving and made from predominantly whole grains. A serving really should still be 1 oz or about 30 gms but they are really never listed as being that small. (The Kashi products often listed a "dieter's serving" which was similar to the recommendations from the official SB site.) I'd still try to stay in the 30-45 gm serving size if possible.

Those original guidelines were relaxed to 5 gms of fiber or more and 8 gms or fewer of sugars per serving when Kraft introduced the SB line of cereals and they didn't even meet the programs guidelines to begin with. So what to do? Relax the guidelines of course, so the Kraft SB products would meet the new guidelines. now they just say "low sugar high fiber" and let you figure out what the heck that is supposed to mean!!

I eat either thick rolled organic oats or steel cut organic oats almost exclusively these days and avoid the whole cold cereal angst and expense, but we have also use a Nature's Path organic Heirloom Whole Grain high fiber cereal that is a flake type cereal that we like and still usually mix with Uncle Sam's. The nice part about creating a mix with Uncle Sam's is that it is so low in sugar, it helps lower the overall average sugar content of the whole bowl of cereal with another cereal that might be somewhat higher in sugars and it is also 100% whole grains.

The other thing you often need to be aware of with hot and cold cereals is how it is processed and how small and refined the kernel, flake, etc you are actually eating is. Grape nuts are not a good choice because of this for example and maybe the best example is oatmeal where the nutritional info for instant, quick, old fashioned and steel cut are all pretty much exactly alike. But the instant and quick cooking are chopped much more finely to allow them to cook more quickly so that raises the glycemic impact of those types above what is recommended for SB purposes. So that is why those are avoid type cereals but the slower cooking, slower digesting versions are encouraged.

One of my favorites: Kellog's All Bran (Original) with blueberries, a few chopped pecans, and a sprinkle of flaxseed. I buy frozen blueberries and pull a few out and microwave when I need them. The blueberry juice mixes with the milk (non-fat, of course) and makes it very tasty. A small bowl is very filling.
