Question Beans?

Hi. I am on day one of SBD and feel pretty good. I have a question about beans? Aren't they high in carbs? I don't understand how they could be part of phase one. Could you clarify? Thanks!

:Welcome:

I know that SB is often associated with being a low carb plan, but it really isn't. Not in the sense of being a really low carb plan like Atkins. Where Atkins promotes eating plenty of fat in the first stages, SB promotes more fiber to keep us satisfied. Beans are a good source of fiber and a "good carb".

We don't count our carbs or calories on SB. We try to eat "Good Carbs and Good Fats" which means that we also try to stay away from saturated fats and trans fats as much as possible, also.

Have you read the book yet? I think that would be a good start in understanding the diet plan. Also do plenty of reading on this board. We have a lot of information here and plenty of friendly people to offer support and answer questions.

Speaking about beans, Albertson's Grocery Store, if you have one in your area, has S&W brand 20 for $10.00. Thats a good bargain. I usually only purchase black beans as they seem to be the lowest in carbs and the highest in fiber and I love the taste.

Default Beans

I came in trying out several different beans from the list but black beans are the most flavorful and best texture to me. Good to hear about the fiber aspect!! I love some raw chopped onions and even cilantro when I have it.

Like Yinyang I was bean curious too. Ive suspected being required was due to it being binding / filling vegetable with good fiber. I figured the controlled amount due to the potential diet busting high calories. This is total speculation but its like good carb good fat within reason.

This board should be an SB diet requirement!

Notice that the suggested servings of beans is limited to 1/3 - 1/2 cup PER DAY. I think that is because they are higher in carbs so there is a limit on to them.

You are a person after my own heart. I just love black beans with raw onion and cilantro. Maybe even a squeeze of lime juice!!!

For one person, a cilantro bunch is difficult to finish. Found out rolling it up in sliced turkey or chicken breast is a great change. Love the flavor of it with the onions. Walmart is good like that Albertsons.

Have you tried the cilantro mayo recipe in the blue SB book? Oh it's so good. I love to make turkey roll-ups with that spread over the middles. YUM!!!

I had never tried black beans before going on this diet! Man, I'd really been missing out. I like them a lot. In fact, I like most beans and I'm so glad that we can have them on this plan!
