| I FINALLY got the SB book! I know! FINALLY! But I read that its ok to have a Slim Fast shake or Advantage edge shake as a meal replacement.... Does anyone else do that for breakfast. I started phase 1 about a month ago and went back to my hometown for a wedding before my phase 1 could be completed and gained some weight there (i cant resist some of the food there since i only go there once a year). So i came back thinking that i would just start over in phase 1 but came home with the flu and a 101 fever! So all i could eat was saltines and chicken noodle soup for the whole week. I just started over again on phase one and dont know how many more eggs i can eat! I know that i can have eggs in 10 other ways, i just dont actually like eggs in any other way but boiled. Before, in the mornings, i would have a smoothie of some sort before the SB diet...... does anyone drink those shakes for breakfast OR lunch? I used to be on Slim fast about 3 years ago and loved the vanilla one with crush ice (kinda made it like a smoothie!) ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums-phase-1/1245-shakes.html Need your advice on this one. I am FINALLY going to be able to do a CLEAN phase 1 then am going back to my hometown in two weeks for another wedding! Geeshhh all these people getting married!!! But i know i wont be eating the foods i had last time, as that was only a month ago! | ||||||||||

| Those shakes have too high a glycemic index. SBD generally recommends that people always eat their food instead of drink it. That way it's absorbed more slowly, so you stay more satiated. But if it works for you, you could make your own smoothies, with crushed ice, yogurt, milk or soy milk, vanilla, splenda, sugar-free syrups for flavoring, sf cocoa powder, etc. You could also add ricotta or cottage cheese in the smoothie with a food processor. You could mix in a tsp of olive oil to keep yourself satiated (you can't taste it). Don't forget V-8 juice or other veggies. Also, you don't have to have eggs for breakfast . You can have other lean proteins for breakfast. | ||||||||||

| I wonder why it says that its good in phase 1 for the Slim fast shakes and the advantage ones? I usually do have milk with SF chocalate powder mix for lunch or around snack time. As for the V8, not a tomato juice fan at all. Even when i tried bloody marys! Not my thing. Cant seem to get past the taste, texture or the smell! Although, i love cherry tomatoes on salads, etc. I know that they want you to eat solid foods, but not everyone's schedule permits them to do so! Thats why they invented drive thru windows and fast food! Just thought i would see since its listed in the book as good and i just thought when i came into a bind, i could pour a can of slim fast over some rushed ice, and be on my way!! Thanks! | ||||||||||

| Jen, Where did you read that? I'd check it again. I've never read that. It just doesn't seem to follow the principles of SBD. I don't have much time either. I'm still learning ways to prepare ahead, etc, so I can quickly have foods made of whole, nutrient-dense foods. I do make my own smoothies for most mornings, & love them! When I do it, it helps to measure out the ingredients the night before, & then in the morning just mix them & I'm good to go. Your veggie doesn't have to be tomato juice. It can be left-over cooked veggies, legumes, or even a salad. I know it seems strange, but it works. And South Beachers do get used to it! | ||||||||||

| Its in the good carbs good eats guide. Where it names tons of foods and says "G" for good, "A" for Avoid, "L" for limited, "V" for very limited and "a" for allowed... Its a smaller book that i picked up at the book store along with the SB diet book. I wanted something to be a quick guide for grocery shoppig etc. | ||||||||||

| Sorry, Jen. I had assumed I could answer according to what I'd read the experts say many times before. WRONG! I looked up the most recent Q & A with the SBD nutritionists... Whole foods are always the best choice over convenience foods. If you need to use one, because you simply can't have whole foods, is OK. Use only as a "safety net". Use no more than once a day. Recommend serving of veggie to make it complete meal. Check ingredients often, because products are reformulated often. Shake should have balance of nutrients. Not high protein. No hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fats. No high fructose corn syrup. No trans fats. | ||||||||||

| yeah, it seems that things change all the time with SB! Just like how my friends have the older book that said NO MILK! And mine says, sure why not! I wasnt planning on having shakes all the time, just kinda when im in a bind and need to eat something really fast either at work before a meeting or before work on the way in! I just started phase 1 AGAIN (long story!) on last tuesday, but tomorrow we have meetings all day long, and i dont want to be stuffing my face in front of everyone, so i might just have a little shake to be descret and full at the same time!!! I am going to hit up the Target store today to check out what shakes are better than others. It kinda gives you a little guide too, on which shakes are good and not good! | ||||||||||

In the beginning, I wanted, & thought I needed, convenience foods more myself. But since I've found I do so much better by making my own stuff, I don't try them so much anymore. (Oops, back on my soapbox again!! :jester Last edited by nancy; 09-12-2006 at 02:11 PM. | ||||||||||

| Well.... i got some at Target. I got the Low carb Slim fast ones. I had to have one yesterday at our meeting and it didnt seem to do anything.... I snacked on some celery sticks when we took a break just because it says to have some veggies with it. So those are always convenient! I havent gained anything yet! ha ha ha! Although it is my TOM, so i have put on a pound or so.... I have one more week on Phase 1 and its on to phase 2!!! I cant wait to eat bananas and apples again! | ||||||||||
