| I recently bought a whole box of Met-Rx Protein Plus bars. They have 32 g of protein, 0 trans fats and only 2 grams of sugar. I usually only eat half a bar as a snack because it is often hard for me to plan other snacks ahead. Will this be ok occasionally as a snack. Here is a link to the info Calories in MET-Rx - Chocolate Roasted Peanut with Caramel Thanks for the help! Kelly | ||||||||||

| IMO, real food is better and it can already be a protein-heavy program if implemented poorly so protein additives are generally unnecessary to begin with as we typically get far more protein than we really need. The link says 10 gms of sugar in a bar though, so half would be 5 gms? And no ingredients are listed. Ingredients in SB are often more critical than nutritional panel info in determining useability. 5 gms of sugar from milk is completely different than 5 gms of sugar from "evaporated cane juice" for example. I'd avoid them personally as I don't buy into the protein bars and shakes mentality, but if you have them and continue to use them until they are gone in the way you describe, I doubt it will affect much. | |||||||||||

| Thanks for your reply. Strangely enough I think the link is incorrect. I have a bar in front of me and it says 310 cal, 9 fat, 2 fiber, 2 sugar, 27 sugar alcohol. I am wondering why its different unless the company in the link was just incorrect. It does not say 10g sugar anywhere on my bar. How bad are sugar alcohols? | ||||||||||

| Hey it was your link! RE: sugar alcohols -- Depends on your sensitivity to them. They are not "bad" in the SB sense. Many SF products use them. They are also called polyols (you can net search that if you like) and specifically have names like malitol, sorbitol, xylitol, mannitol, erythritol and so forth. They are neither sugars nor alcohols. They are a sweet substance, some of them natural, that the body doesn't absorb, so they are fairly low calorie as a sweetener. The larger issue is one of "gastric distress". Since they aren't absorbed by the body, they pass through the body taking the rest of what is in there with it if you catch my drift. Depending on intake quantities and sensitivities and the specific polyol used (some affect more than others) symptoms might range from just mild stomach gurgles, to gas, to diarrhea at the extreme end. A lot of the SF treats allowed in all phases on SB use polyols, so it's more of quantity and personal tolerance issues in their usage. BTW, natural forms of protein and other healthy snacks don't have polyol issues! | |||||||||||
