Default Vitamins?

On SBD, do I need to take a vitamin supplement, and if so, what kind?

Sounds like a good combo. Kind of a personal choice IMO. If you are really eating a lot of the variety of food groups and variety within those food groups, I'm not personally sure they are all that necessary. But a good multi-vitamin/multi-mineral combo, fish or omega oil capsule and calcium are a good mix for most women. Men don't necessarily need the additional calcium quite as much but can substitute some other things in if needed.

I think it all depends where you are at with the plan. If you are just starting and not sure if you are getting everything nutritionally(some people tale longer getting the hang of nutrition) then all means thake a good vitamin such as centrum specialized for your needs. Some don't need a vitamin.

Thanks!

I picked up a multi vitamin today and extra calcium and Vt D.
I think that should be good, I eat really well, with tons of veg, and I mix up the meat and fish quite a bit, so I am getting my good omega's too!!

Cheers to Good Health!
C

I find myself seriously slacking in the calcium department sometimes. (and I hate to say it, but I can't remember the last time I had fish)...I get into a 'quick fix' and go mode with my menu's sometimes, and don't get the variety of foods I'm supposed to...I'll be the first to admit it....SHAME ON ME!...

SBD considers cheese a protein, and not diary right? Well, I eat plenty of cheese, and I eat yogurt pretty regularly, but that is about all I can think of...I really don't drink enough milk..sometimes I don't think I get any dairy other than my yogurt...and look...don't have any yogurt packed today.......I just forget to drink my milk I guess....So...I take my pill, which I also sometimes forget...lol...

so yeah, it is kinda a personal choice I guess Red...I'd rather be safe and take that calcium & extra vitiman now, than to run into a deficiency later in life simply because I got busy and forget about it????...now that, would suck...so I take those pills just to cover all my bases I guess...

If my menu was more 'complete' like it was supposed to be, I wouldn't need these...I do understand you in that aspect Red....I should overhaul my menu again...I'm sure I'm lacking quite a few 'daily' things if I were to look at it closer.

I have a hard time drinking my milk, and I won't eat it in cereal.
I have to be vigilant about my calcium though as my mother has osteoporosis...she's on 54...I have to be careful.

In the book it recommeded taking a multivitamin too..hmmmm. I don't know why if you are eating balanced...oh well, I agree, better safe than sorry later.

Thanks Guys!

feeling guilty are we TinyT?? Really wasn't picking on anyone for their choices or lack thereof. I think the JAMA came out a few years ago and recommended that most people really should take a multivitamin/multimineral supplement because we don't really eat that much variety and food isn't as nutritious as it used to be. Dr. A has some specific vitamin recommendations but can't get to them with the other board down. I'm pretty sure he recommends calcium and fish oil or at least some kind of omega-3 supplement. (flax is a good source of plant based omega oils for instance)

FWIW, here's a link to a Daily Dish about omega-3 oils: Omega-3 Refresher
