| I just recently discovered that Split Peas are considered a bean on the SBD... but peas aren't listed as ok... I really don't care for peas anyways, but I guess I just want to be sure I have the info right, because I love Split Pea soup. What is the difference between the two? Thank you so much for your help!!! Blessings!!! ~Precious~ | ||||||||||

| I believe its the difference between using them as the seed (split pea - legume) vs. using them as the full grown pea (which is actually a fruit). Kept digging and found more details.. Peas (all peas) are pulses... The standard garden variety are usually eaten when they are at full maturity in the growing season (hence the sweetness of the pea). Split peas are usually your field variety (in come in many colors actually) and are the after maturation dried seeds of essentially the same plant. When the are hulled the seeds are then divided in half (the name "split pea"). Last edited by luvbug412; 01-08-2009 at 02:23 PM. | |||||||||||

| and the resulting starch, sugar and glycemic index value differences! Thanks LuvBug. Didn't know the pea was the seed before it matures into the fruit! kewl! There is a P1 list of foods sticked near the top of this forum if you need to review the lists for any reason like this as well. | |||||||||||
