| The problem with nuts is they also carry a higher fat content so are very calorie dense. Don't know if you will or won't lose weight substituting nuts for protein, but calories do matter! What don't you like about the meat substitutes? | |||||||||||

| Everyone is different, but I have found I can eat more nuts than the guidelines say, but there is a point where they affect my weight loss. | ||||||||||

| Nuts are something I know I can lose control with, so I limit mine to the suggested guideline (no more than 1/2 oz per day). But, then again, I eat all types of meat and don't have to worry about getting enough protein. I tried a vegetarian diet a couple years ago (because my DD wanted to) and after doing it for a short time (I don't remember just how long it was, but I wouldn't say it was much more than a month), I went to donate blood and was refused because my iron was too low. I was anemic and I've NEVER had that happen to me before and I've been giving blood for over 30 years. They told me to go home and have a big steak (which I was happy to oblige!) and I've been fine donating ever since. So, I obviously do not know enough about getting enough protein without eating meat. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums-phase-1/2371-nuts.html I say all this just to let you know that I am not qualified to help out with this question at all with regard to protein requirements, but just that I will overdo on nuts if given the opportunity. Would you be able to use them wisely if given the green light to eat more of them? That's the real question I think you have to ask yourself, and only you know the answer to that one. | |||||||||||

| thank you for your responses! i know for sure now that i shouldnt eat more than the recommended amount because yesterday (day three of phase one), i completely fell off the wagon. i ate too much peanut butter, which led to sugar and alcohol. i think i was just having a bad day and it was all for emotional reasons. so now im doing strict phase one. i think i will just eat a lot more fish for protein. i hate this "all or nothing" mindset i have towards dieting. i wish i was better at moderation. but now, im pretty optimistic. | ||||||||||

| It seems to me that the all or nothing approach works. I love my wine and a little glass just doesn't work with me. Been there done that! So this time on SB I am focusing on eating healthy SB meals, including the snacks. I also find the less I obsess, the better off I am. | ||||||||||

| bet you I love nuts more than you do! LOL! If I could I would eat 3 tablespoons of peanut butter for each snack and dessert. I never get sick of it, it always hits the spot and make me smile I learned the way you did. I ate too much peanut butter one day - it was on accident though. I didn't realize I could only do 2 T of it a day. I figured I am better off than I was because I love natural peanut butter and almond butter, which I don't think I would have ever been turned on to if it wasn't for SB! What I do now is I just let it sit in my mouth for a while and just savor the taste - every little bit of it. I imagine I will do this for chocolate once I get to phase 3 | ||||||||||

| For now, nuts are off my list. I finally admitted to myself yesterday that I cannot handle them right now. I have been overdoing on them more than I like, so I will just take the all-or-nothing approach for a while. I'm going to try the roasted garbanzo beans as a replacement and see how that works for me... | |||||||||||

| I like the nuts b/c they really keep me satiated. I too have to watch the portion but I have found allowing 1/4 cup a day works fine. In a perfect world I would have that in the afternoon and again as a evening snack. | ||||||||||

| I like the roasted garbanzo beans almost as much as I do nuts. I just don't like making them. :-) | ||||||||||
