Default Valentines Night Out

Last night, to celebrate Cupid Day, My Valentine and I decided to go see "Friday The Thirteenth" (Our first Date was to see "Freddy vs. Jason" six years ago, so we considered this to be "romantic" ). I had a little stress earlier in the day about how uncomfortable I might be in the "POPCORN and CANDY Den" that is our local theatre. Turns out, we were running late, so we packed up our dinner (chicken breast on a bed of veggies), stuffed it in our backpacks with bottles of water, and off we went to the show. IT WAS GREAT!! (The dinner, not the movie ). I didn't miss popcorn and milk-duds at all....I mean, NOT AT ALL. My better half got a diet coke, and I had a few sips, but....YUCK. Sorry, that stuff just isn't for me. Water was fine...better than fine.

The only thing that made me uncomfortable was having to pee like a racehorse!!!! Since starting phase 1 almost a week ago, I have upped my water intake 10 fold, and, well, if a catheter didn't hurt, Id probably have one installed, if you know what Im saying...

After the movie, we walked over to the bookstore, as usual. I found myself in the cookbook section instead of my usual true crime and music theory sections. Just checked out all the "healthy" books, lots of em, looking for different recipe ideas. While we were in that section, I was commenting on how the cravings really do go away after a few days. I mean, I was riding high about how cool it was to not miss the popcorn and candy. I was patting myself all over my back. THEN...my eyes glanced to a "Mrs Fields Cookies" cookbook....that unmistakable logo of hers...and BAM! My stomach did a flip-flop and I really wanted a fricken cookie!!!! We laughed and walked away from that book...fast.

Sounds like a success! We ended up going out to see a band at a local club and danced our dinner off! Nice that the kids are old enough to be out on their own valentine's dates and mom and dad get some time off too!

Also on the peeing thing, the water weight that we lose in P1 is typically from using up glycogen stores in the body due to reducing the ready carbs for energy. Our bodies then look to the stored glycogen first which is it's function anyway. But to store it, our bodies store water with it. (just the way it works biochemically). So when we deplete it and use it up, we release that water. So it's typical to pee a lot more in P1 anyway and why there are often more dramatic weight loss numbers in P1 from losing that excess water. (The downside of course is that we often stall or gain a bit as we move to P2 as we replenish some amount of those glycogen stores and add back a bit of the water as we do so.)

Interesting, RR. Thanks for the info. (And I simply thought I was peeing every 30 minutes because I am drinking so much more!). There is a lot to learn about nutrition and physiology...I find it fascinating (Thank God )

I did too! I did a lot of outside research along the way as well. I truly didn't have a clue about any of this when I started. I'm just kind of a "cliff clavin" type who stores a lot of useless facts and likes to "know stuff".

Oh, I get it RR.

Since starting this Beach Adventure a week ago, I have been in "total immersion"...reading everything I can get my hands on regarding this method and just nutrition in general. Heck, I spent the three days prior to starting phase 1 obsessively reading as many testimonials as I possibly could. It really is a fascinating subject...how our bodies work with and respond to nutrition. I feel like Im almost turning myself into a science project! (Good thing I loved -and aced- science in school ).

hehehe... you'll soon be able to bore your friends and family as easily as I do!!

Here are a couple sites to help keep you busy!

The Nutrition Source - Harvard School of Public Health -- The Harvard School of Public Health nutritional site. Lots of good info and Dr. A incorporated a lot of Dr. Walter Willett's nutritional science into SBD. I like the HSPH version of the food and exercise pyramid more than the new one from the FDA and I keep a copy of it on my fridge. If everyone paid attention to this healthy eating pyramid, we'd have a lot healthier and far less obese population. It's not a SB site, but it really helps corroborate why this is really a healthy, balanced eating program for life and not just another "diet".

Nutrition facts, calories in food, labels, nutritional information and analysis – NutritionData.com -- My standard reference for what's in foods, esp. things like fruits, vegetables and protein sources that don't come with labels. They have a lot of other cool features too if you want to get into them, but I mostly just use their food database.

http://www.cspinet.org/reports/chemcuisine.htm -- A good scientifically based review of all sorts of food additives including many popular sugar substitutes. As a public watchdog organization their mission is primarily knowledge and information based and neither pro or con on any type of food element beyond it's general safety and effectiveness. Or as I like to say, it does not appear to me that they have any "dog in the fight" on what's good or bad.
