| French, here's some reading about some of the differences between the two plans. http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/sou.../atkinssbd.htm I work midnights and need to go to bed now. I have to work tonight. I'm afraid if I tried to explain it right now, I wouldn't make a whole lot of sense in my present sleep deprived state. :speechless: Have a great week end and try not to get a burn while tanning. Nitey nite! :Sleepy: | |||||||||||

| In a nutshell Atkins achieves weightloss through eating more fat and restricts all carbs. Carbs in veggies are allowed but the serving sizes are much smaller on Atkins than on SB. ( On phase one, Atkins allows 2 cups per day total and SB allows 4.5 cups per day). As you progress through the stages you add in more carbs, a little at a time and top out at about 40-60 grams per day which is equal to about one bowl of cereal or two slices of bread. You count your carbs on Atkins to make sure you don't go over your daily limit. In phase one you start with a 20 carb limit (subtracting out the fiber eaten from the carb count) and then you add back 5 grams at a time as you add in the new foods, until you determine the amount of carbs you stop losing at, which is somewhere between 40-60. All sugars are avoided just like on this diet and they are even more strict. As in you can't have any grams of sugar in anything ever. We are allowed 3 grams or less in our foods at any stage. Atkins acheives weight loss on the principle that if you eat more fat you will get full faster and ultimately lose more calories. SB contends that if you eat your 3 meals per day plus your two snacks and dessert/snack, you will achieve steady blood sugar and feel satisfied. The Atkins diet also causes your body to burn fat through ketosis. While this is not a natural state, it is not dangerous, though nobody knows the effects of doing this long term. This is achieved by not giving your body higher amounts of carbs and therefore your body turns to other fuels to burn. Since this is not a natural state for the body, you do get a bit dehydrated from this and you need to always make sure you drink adequate amounts of water. And it is recommended to take additional supplements to help with leg cramps and potassium levels since you are not eating as much carbs. Nutritionists recommend we eat at least 90 grams of carbs per day for proper body function, but dieters on Atkins will probably disagree with that number. I used to be on Atkins before doing this diet. At first the diet works ok, but once you start climbing the rungs, adding in more foods we find that we are stalling out. It appears that the reason for this is at some point you've got to start reducing your calories so you have to start cutting back on fats. So on Atkins if you do that, you are still not adding in carbs from whole grains like we do here until you have reached your goal weight. So the food choices remain more restrictive the whole way through. Some people love the diet because they are eating full flavor fat so that tastes good. But the Atkins diet does not restrict the amount of saturated fat you can have and sat fat is still a big issue in the medical world as a bad for you fat that leads to heart disease and other diseases. So we feel that on SB we are being more cautious with sat fats which makes us feel more responsible to our bodies and we get to have our carbs earlier in the diet than on Atkins. SB uses the same approach Atkins does by doing a Phase one (on Atkins it's called Induction). This is the phase to detox your body from sugar and starches. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums-phase-1/519-questions-questions-questions.html On Atkins Phase one you can't have beans of any kind or any dairy whatsoever but you can have high saturated fat. On SB we are still eating flavorful fats but from lower sat fat choices and we are not as severely restricting carbs, though the portions are controlled. I hope this answers your question and I'm really sorry it got so long winded! | ||||||||||

| Thanks for that excellent comparison, Mindy! And thanks for reminding me that I am SO much happier on this plan ...... not that I really needed the reminder, cause I'm loving this way of eating. I can't imagine never having more than 60 grams of carbs now. | |||||||||||

| They do eat a lot of fat in the beginning. As they progress up the rungs in Ongoing Weight Loss, they're suppose to cut down on the amount of fat consumed. Unfortunately many Atkineers choose to stay in an Ongoing Induction level of carb intake of only 20 grams per day and they don't progress through the other steps. Some of them seem to develop a fear of carbs and are afraid to climb the carbohydrate ladder for fear of gaining weight back. So, they're always eating lots of fat and much of that is saturated fat. Not to mention they're not getting the proper nutrients, IMO. I think that, if possible, your nutrients should come from a proper well balanced diet and not from some pills. Just my opinion though. | |||||||||||
