Default Food ???'s - LC Yogurt, Flax. Etc.

Hi Everyone!

Just a couple questions about Phase 1. Last week I went out and bought everything I needed for Atkins because I thought for sure I would stick to it this time. I still have heavy whipping cream for my coffee, low-carb yogurt, flax seed (I like to put in my yogurt) and butter. Can I still use these foods in moderation on South Beach?

whipping cream -- no (you can use small amounts of ff half and half for coffee, etc.)
butter -- no (find a good transfat free margarine instead like Smart Balance)
flax -- yes. counts as part of your nut/seed allowance (although personally I think of it more as a supplement and don't count it that way and do OK, but may not work that way for everyone.)

LC yogurts -- answered this in your other post. perhaps in P2 until you get other kinds in if they will keep for 2 weeks. Generally not recommended though and not until P2 at the earliest.

From my understanding of Atkins and the research that supports it, you can eat a lot of saturated fats without health issues if you keep total carbs very low. SB relies on more traditional views and nutritional research that indicate saturated fat consumption has a high correlation with increased levels of cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease and it encourages higher levels of good carbs so mixing the two plans in this regard may be counterproductive health wise.

personally i would eat the butter over some chemical over processed stuff, the SB book says to use olive oil or a butter spray. The only reason i would use butter is i fear the process and chemicals used in FAKE products...I trust Mr. Cow more than i trust a chemical plant.

Just be very strict and careful for the first couple of weeks. introduce foods back slowly, see a doctor from time to time. obviously the "bad" foods, carbs etc must be done in very strict moderation.

I understand your personal choices, but butter is still a no-no in all phases according to Dr. Agatston. The unhealthy aspects of margarines were the transfats which are worse for heart health than even saturated fats. But products like Smart Balance have been formulated to lower cholesterol and are still considered a "good fat" for SB purposes.

I personally don't use any artificial sweeteners, but I try to refrain from telling others not to since they are an allowed item according to the foods lists.
