Default Been here before! Couple of start up questions...

Hi. I know the basics as I have been here before but I do have a couple of specific questions. There are two meals that I was planning on making this week (before I decided to start back) and I wanted to check them out.

    Taco Chicken (crockpot)
    3-4 frozen chicken breast
    1 package taco seasoning
1 package Hidden Valley Ranch mix
    1 chopped onion
    1 can rotel tomatoes
    1 can of blackbeans
    1 can of white beans
    1 can of red beans
1 can of corn (this I know I would have to leave out!0

(No draining or rinsing of beans, just toss it in.)

The other was another crockpot recipe - bottom round roast, 1 package of Lipton Onion Soup Mix topped with 1 can Golden Mushroom soup.

Thanks in advance for your help with these two recipes!

    Kelly

Another question - I would assume I cannot use bbq sause even if it does NOT have HFCS in it for P1 but can I have that when I get to P2? Thanks.

    Hi Kelley! Welcome back!

Personally I would rinse the beans first regardless and then if you think you need more liquid, add a little water to compensate. The final product will be less gassy if you rinse the beans first and it also gets off any added sugars for preservatives they might have used. You would also have to read the ingredients on those seasoning packets. Since ranch dressing is typically OK, that one is probably fine, but particularly for taco seasoning, you can easily make your own with cumin, chili powder, cayenne, and garlic and/or onion powders. Often they add sugars and starches to those kinds of prepared seasoning packets and it is so easy to add your own anyway.

Kind of the same comments on the pot roast. You can probably add better ingredients than in a packet or can. And the mushroom soup probably wouldn't work in any phase because of the cream and saturated fats.

Probably no on the bbq sauce in P2 unless you can find a low sugar version made with an artificial sweetener, or you make your own. bbq sauces are mostly all sugar!

    Post BBQ sauce recipe

One can have bbq sauce it they make it themselves. Also, remember that pure maple syrup has a low glycemic index.

Darcy's BBQ Sauce - Low Glycemic

1 cup no sugar added ketchup (or make your own)
    1 Tbs pure maple syrup
    1 Tbs apple cidar vinegar
    1 Tbs olive oil
    2 tsp Liquid Smoke
    1/4 cup finely chopped onion
    1 garlic clove minced
    1 tsp chili powder
    1 tsp paprika
    1/2 tsp black pepper
    1/2 tsp cumin

Whisk together. It is better after sitting in the frig at least an hour before using to allow ingredients to marry. I use this on chicken breasts cooked on the stove top or baked in the over. Allow meat to simmer in the sauce for the flavor to penitrate. Make notes after you eat it to tweak the ingredients to suit your taste.

Oops, just now read the actual question. HFCS is evil no matter what phase you are on. The stuff should be banned from US shelves.

It's really no worse or better than plain table sugar. It's really almost identical in terms of its glucose/fructose ratios. The problem is in the sheer amounts that people consume in readily digestible foods like sodas and sweets. If you replaced all the HFCS in every product with raw sugar, you would still have all the same problems. For an actual rational discussion of it, you might want to have a look at this 2004 article from the NY Times. The New York Times > Log In

FWIW, the per capita consumption of HFCS has dropped over the last 5 years or so and obesity rates continue to increase, so there really is very little correlation between those two items to begin with.

I've actually done alot of reading up on HFCS and I feel that it IS different then regular table sugar. Check it out! http://www.accidentalhedonist.com/in...ing_high_fruct
