Default Living with the Parents

The trouble, and part of the reason I've put off doing this diet for so long is I live with my parents...yes, sad but true. So yes, what they have for dinner is what I have, unless I want to go out to eat or unless I cook for myself, which usually ends up with me just skipping meals (I usually have to be in the mood to cook)

So is there any tips on living with someone else, being parents or a signifigant other, who is not doing South Beach?

Hi, Sidhe. Welcome! :sun:

I suggest you read the book & stickies on this board & get to know the principles of SBD. Then do your best to get SBD-friendly foods handy for yourself in your home. If your parents are willing, most dishes can be converted to become SBD-friendly. That's probably a big if. They might be more motivated when they see how much better your health is getting. When you do cook, maybe you could make extra & store it so it's ready for a good meal on another day.

As you do SBD, you'll feel better & better, so won't be tempted to eat the wrong foods as much. Remember, don't let yourself get too hungry, especially in Phase 1. Remember to have enough good veggies, lean protein, & good oils.

If you have trouble, maybe your doctor could order a consult for you with a dietician who knows SBD. That's GREAT to hear that your doctor recommended this healthy way of eating!!

:speechless: Greetings! How about you discuss your diet intentions with your mom and ask if you can go along on a grocery trip to see if there are SB friendly foods you can incorporate into the week that she agrees to making as well? Maybe this will help you all eat better.

I'm not suggesting you demand that your folks go on SB, but if you get some extra veggies and low fat condiments thrown in, that will be less you will have to avoid if they cook differently than you normally eat?

Of course you can just avoid the starch and full fats if they are served to you but like French said, maybe it's time you get in the mood and take some better control over your diet. Maybe offer to cook for the family every now and then and you can make a completely friendly SB meal on those days. Mom would probably appreciate the break!

Well, I read the book...three times... so I'm fairly familair with the principles of SBD. But yes, getting my parents to convert to SBD friiendly foods is going to be the hardest part... I'm probably better off just trying to make my own meals. Mom and Dad pretty much live on pasta, meat and potatos..so unfortunately, its not very likely that that will change , although I'm trying to swing them around, both could stand to be healthier themselves, I'm hoping, as was mentioned, that as I start to get healthier, that that might sway them.

Well, I have spoken to my parents about my deciding to do this. They say, hey thats great, but they won't do it as well, I actually suggested that my mom do it with me (seeing how south beach was created by a cardiologist and that my mom is having some heart problems) but declined... in a big way.

French, I would quote you, but I'm not sure what to quote lol.
But no, I don't expect my mom to cook two seperate meals, which is why i was asking here. Basically, if anyone can suggest anything that is really EASY to make, that goes along with phase 1, it would be aprreciated, and yes, I do plan on cooking twice the amount I'll actually eat, because I can then save it for another day, (or take to work with me for lunch) I do cook about once or twice a week, when I'm at home, and mom doesn't already have something planned. my work hours are crazy though, so sometimes I'm just not here for dinner, and I'm left to fend for myself.

But thanks everyone, you've been great!
