| Not much discussion going on here these days. I thought I'd see if I could maybe get something going... Do you think that there are people lurking here (are you one of them?) that just cannot seem to stick to the plan as written? Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? Do you think that you can do this alone? Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) Before I post my responses, I'm going to wait and see what others say, but I know the answers already for myself. | |||||||||||

| Not much discussion going on here these days. I thought I'd see if I could maybe get something going... Do you think that there are people lurking here (are you one of them?) that just cannot seem to stick to the plan as written? I am not one of them, but I do think there are people that would rather just read the information they can find, but not actually participate in the conversations. They will register when they finally have a question, they cannot find the answer to. Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? I think it depends on the person. I am driven when I find a community that I can relate to. It helps to see how others handle the same situation I am in. So, I will be more successful, if I have at least one other person going through it with me. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums-phase-2/3506-such-quiet-group.html I also think that there are those individuals that do not need the extra push of another person. Do you think that you can do this alone? Very much the same as the last answer. I know I do better with others to help me out. My biggest help would definately be if it were in person, such as my husband. Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? Definately without a doubt it will help, but along with the knowledge, you have to also have the self-motivation. You can know every right and wrong food to eat, the best exercises, but if you are not motivated to do it, it will not help. Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? Addiction?? I am not sure, I seem to eat when I am tired, I am tired quite often, so I will eat just to stay awake. I will eat when I am stuffed full. Since starting South Beach, I have not been doing this, and I am actually feeling much better. How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) How do I measure this? I really want to get well. I hate being tired, I hate being out of breath from walking up a couple flights of stairs, I hate being heavy and not fitting into my nicer clothes. So, I am really motivated to stop the eating factory; however, I am seeing a glitch in my motivation when it comes to exercising. I am exercising, but not enough and not often enough. | ||||||||||

| Do you think that there are people lurking here (are you one of them?) that just cannot seem to stick to the plan as written? I've been quite the lurker for some time now. I've posted a few times but enjoy reading the threads. I have fallen off the wagon a few times and almost don't feel 'good enough' to get back on the boards! Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? I do! I think all the 'regulars' are the ones with colors of success and I, as a lurker, am just a hopeful. Do you think that you can do this alone? Heck no. Absolutely not but I hate being so down on myself and I have been for the past couple weeks. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=3506 Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? I think that's part of it. A good support system sure helps too. Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? Bingo! My problem is peanut butter (at least it's natural and not sugar added). I've been losing the battle with my peanut butter snacks. I really need to give them up completely because I love it so much and I swear I can eat a whole jar. No joke. What can I do? How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) I would like some control! I did so well on Phase 1 that for some reason I can't seem to do Phase 2 very well at all. It's like I will allow myself one piece of whole grain toast and then I will eat 6 slices. When I am on Phase 1, then it's totally restrictive and for some reason I can do that better than allowing myself just one piece of whole grain food. I'm having a hard time with that. Now I will eat like 3 days straight Phase 1, then eat like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then I feel like a failure and go back to Phase 1 eating again for 3 days straight, then have some french fries. Do you get the picture? I need help! | ||||||||||

| Do you think that there are people lurking here (are you one of them?) that just cannot seem to stick to the plan as written? Jilly - I'm still lurking. Haven't been to active here for reasons. Sticking to the plan though. I realized quite quickly that it took a good two solid days of eating to get back on the good path. Glad I did it with South Beach instead of loading up on fast food (trust me the temptation was there because I didn't feel like cooking!). If I do fall off the bandwagon (heaven forbid) I know there is a place to come home too and ask to have my butt kicked to get back on board!!! Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? 6 of one - 1/2 doz. of the other. You can get plenty out of lurking. And if you do - great. If you are like me - the interaction means everything. Do you think that you can do this alone? Negative!!! I find having support extremely helpful. I tried going it alone twice before (not with South Beach specifically) and really had no one to turn to in order to vent out frustrations or throw ideas at. This forum helps!!! Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? Knowledge is power Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? I thought I would have specific food addictions. But it turned out that my addiction was to eating itself. There was some degree of gratification in just munching. Fill that time with "happy" activities - like meditation, stretching, exercise, etc. has worked for me. Working through my emotional attachment to food is what is going to lead to my success! ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=3506 How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) Don't know where to start. I've led a poor diet/no movement lifestyle for so long, I think the body is revolting as my head and heart have moved forward, but my behind isn't ready to take the grand leap. The concepts and style of South Beach have so many additional benefits to just weight loss. My dentist has given me the thumbs up, my family Dr. has done the same and now my ob/gyn. Carving away the weight loss aspect of it - each one of them have their own reasons for why eating south beach is healthy. (Not to mention what an excellent excuse for farmer's market shopping!) | |||||||||||

| Do you think that there are people lurking here (are you one of them?) that just cannot seem to stick to the plan as written? Probably. I'm not sure that sticking to the plan 100% as written is necessary though. I tend to believe 90% compliance would probably work for most people if they just stayed at that 90% level until they reached a healthy weight for their body type. My belief in consistency and longevity as being far more important than perfection and that making small changes over long periods of time can produce significant results. A constant drip of water will wear through a rock eventually! On the other hand, "Learn the rules, so you know how to break them properly!" Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? I have no idea. I've lurked in a lot of "newbie" type threads and support groups on various boards and had the feeling at times that the blind were leading the blind and simply hoped they would all find their way through the process safely and end up figuring it out along the way. It would make sense though that those most engaged in the process and interested in learning about good nutrition would be more likely to be successful though. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=3506 Do you think that you can do this alone? Hmmm... In truth I think we all do "this" alone. We're all ultimately responsible for the choices we make and the consequences thereof. I have seen studies though where this sort of support and interaction is more important to women being successful than men, so I will plead to not understanding gender differences on this one! I think everyone has to find what clicks and works for them. Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? By this do you mean knowledge of self? Or more self-directed learning to attain knowledge of the program, healthy nutrition and exercise basics? I think both are essential actually! Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? If I say "No" then am I in denial which only confirms the "yes" answer? Seems like a no-win question!! How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) At first, not very much. It was a long slow process of awareness that it was a full mind/body/spirit "team" approach. Wellness just kind of evolved along the way and came more fully into my consciousness when I got serious about my yoga practice. What drove me far more originally and still does to a certain extent is my innate stubbornness and my desire to simply beat the odds that said something in the neighborhood of only 5%-15% of the people who "diet" will lose the weight and keep it off. I just kept telling myself I was going to find a way to be in that group come hell or highwater. FWIW, I finally got around this past weekend to filling out my application to participate in the National Weight Control Registy. For those not familiar with it, it's sole criteria for joining is for anyone who has lost 30 lbs. or more and kept it off for more than 12 months. You basically agree to share your medical information and agree to participate in any studies they send you for a five year period in an effort for researchers to better understand what are the common elements of weight managment "success" according to the stated criteria. Personally I think the time period for keeping it off should be longer, but they didn't ask me!! LOL!! Last edited by RedRox; 02-10-2009 at 09:24 AM. Reason: added info about NWCS | |||||||||||

| My turn now! Do you think that the ones that do participate in the conversations have better success than the lurkers? Not really....most of us that lurk do so probably because someone else has asked the question that they would have like to ask..... Do you think that you can do this alone? No way! It's reassuring to me out that there that they are feeling exactly the same as I do. Do you think that self-knowledge will get you where you want to go? For sure! Do you believe that you have an addiction and that once you start eating certain foods you cannot stop? If so, what can you do? I guess I do...I have never admitted this before...I have great will power but at times I am week and then if I give in I cannot stop....I love home made biscuits and I love pastry products! At christmas it was fruit mince pies...home made.....my god they were good!! How much do you want to get well? (And I don't mean just "thin".) I am a fit person and I love feeling healthy! I was up until 5years ago thin......always had been....there was a number of factors as to why I put on 40 pounds....It's not nice to go from being a nice weight to being large.....I never want to get as big as I was again! Good luck everyone __________________ | ||||||||||
