| Ok , so I am really wanting some bread and am looking at the bread I got for the kids and am wondering if it will work for me. The first 5 ingredients are: whole wheat flour, water, enriched wheat flour, brown sugar, and wheat gluten. It has no trans fats or hfcs-i think that is why I bought it for the kids-but it has the brown sugar as the 4th ingredient. Is it true you shouldn't have sugar as the one of the first 5 ingredients in any product? Some feedback would be great since some kind of sandwich would be great. BTW-these ingredients are a lot better than the one I was looking at today at the store when trying to figure out what to get. Thanks, Denise:sun: | ||||||||||

| The third ingredient is enriched wheat flour. According to Dr. Agatston, the added nutrients in enriched foods cannot compensate for the natural nutrients and fiber that were lost during the refining process. We're suppose to avoid enriched and eat fortified. Breads containing "enriched wheat flour" or "unbleached flour," may mean that the bread is actually made with refined flour. Instead, look for breads made with 100 percent whole wheat or other whole grains, and always choose those with at least 3 grams of fiber per slice. Also, try to avoid bread containing a lot of added sugar or hydrogenated oils. Here is a list of SBD acceptable breads: Pepperidge Farm: 100% Stoneground Whole Wheat Natural Whole Grain 9 Grain Natural Whole Grain German Dark Wheat Pepperidge Farm Natural Whole Grain Crunchy Grains or Multi-Grain Rubschlager: European Style Whole Grain 100% Rye Rye-Ola Sunflower 100% Rye Rye-Ola Rye 100% Rye Rye-Ola Pumpernickle Brownberry: 100% Whole Wheat Natural 12 Grain Natural Oatnut Other: Nature's Own 100% Whole Wheat Bread Mrs. Baird's 100% Whole Wheat Roman Meal 100% Whole Wheat Arnold 100% Whole Wheat dinner. | I know what you mean. They're out to sell their product and make a buck. It's up to us as smart consumers to make the right choices for our own well being. I hope you use the list and find a bread that's acceptable for this healthy way of eating. Then you can go have a sandwich! | |||||||||||

| I think for sugars they say to get one "low" in sugar. No HFCS. I know it's really hard to find one that fits the standards. I've spent alot of time reading in the bread aisle. None on that list are in my area, not even Pepperidge Farms anymore. I found one or two from Orowheat, but they cause craving in me. Even at Whole Foods it's hard to find any that fit the standards, but I've found at least a couple. There are a few other names on another thread, "Guidelines For Bread Products", under the Forum, South Beach Diet. To try to have it all on one thread, I'll put a couple of other possibilities there. And I'll keep adding on when I find more. If you, or anyone else, finds one, that would be great if you added it to that thread! | ||||||||||

| As long as the total sugar content for the bread is 3 grams or less, the sugar content is ok. But absolutely avoid High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS). It dangerously raises tryglycerides and causes cravings. It is believed to be one of the biggest contributors to the obesity epidemic. It is difficult to find breads without this ingredient but they are out there. The Pepperidge Farm line does have HFCS except for their "Natural" 100% Whole Wheat bread. Avoid enriched wheat flour. That is low fiber flour that has been stripped of it's nutrients and had to have it's nutritional value restored through "enriching" the flour. Shoot for breads that have no less than 3 grams of dietary fiber. | ||||||||||
