Its always been difficult for me to swallow a mouthful - tap, filtered, bottled, ice cold, knighted, holy - so diet or no diet Ive lived on crystal light peach iced tea forever. Okay, now walmart's version of it. Im told water doesnt have a taste but AIR doesnt have a taste. Water tastes BLECHT!

My Dr says 8 glasses drinking water = 8 glasses of crystal light. His point is whether you stomach receives water alone or with a tuna sandwich or 7up syrup or an apple or with crystal light powder or Hershey bar doesnt affect your body's hydration. Personally your mouth votes Hershey but I wander. I know he's only one doctor but it makes sense to me and I dont know if the SB doctor would agree so I'll leave that to the more knowledgable.

When you drink plain water you are flushing out your body and all of it's organs. When you drink water with anything in it, such as in tea, crystal light, etc. you are making your kidneys and liver do work to process the added chemicals and nutrients so they aren't getting flushed.

So you really do need to drink plain water for the health of your body. And while you are in Phase 1 it is especially imporant to hydrate with water more than ever. This is because you are flushing out your body during phase one and cutting back on the carbs and this causes more dehydration in the body.

About the bacon question, turkey bacon is the wiser choice according to the SB diet.

This Daily Dish that I get in my emails might help you with your concern about what to drink. I believe that if you go to their web site and fill out a questionnaire that anyone can receive the Daily Dish. But I haven't checked that out more recently, so it could have changed.

Quote:
The Word on Water

(Published 04/28/06) Contrary to popular belief, it's not necessary to keep track of how much water you drink each day. Instead of following the frequently recommended guideline (eight cups daily, which turns out to be an arbitrary amount), the Institute of Medicine (IOM) suggests drinking when you're thirsty. By using this gauge, studies show that most Americans do a good job of keeping themselves hydrated throughout the day — without keeping track of water consumption. Even better news: Other beverages — including caffeinated ones, like coffee and diet soda — can help you meet your fluid needs, according to the IOM. Low-fat and fat-free milk are other South Beach DietŪ-friendly beverages that can help you meet your fluid requirements. Foods that contain a lot of water, such as vegetables and fruits (Phase 2), also count.

On average, women require 91 ounces of water each day and men require 125 ounces, though athletes and people who live in warmer climates may need more. It's worth repeating, however, that you don't need to keep track of your fluid consumption. You can tell you're not getting enough water if you develop increased thirst, dry lips and mouth, headache, fatigue, and darker urine. Consult with your physician if you notice any of these symptoms.
I hope this helps. To all of the people who choose to drink a lot of water, carry on! I think it's a matter of choice, but I just have never developed a fondness of plain water.

I think I'd be more concerned with the kind of sweetener that you're consuming. Splenda is the SB diet's sweetener of choice. Equal (aspartame) causes health problems in some people and also weight loss stalls. So, just be aware.
