In south beach, what is the take on heavy cream, regular sour cream, butter and full fat mayo? I think i remember a while back reading that 1 tbsn of mayo is alllowed. I don't have the book unfortunately. I'd like to try adding more SB type foods to my diet, which i've tried in the past and had some success with. Though I'm finding it hard to get out of my atkins high fat mindset! Those 4 things are the ones that I think I would really miss the most. Especially the cream and mayo. I may consider a soy creamer, which i don't mind in place of cream..but light/fat free mayo?? No way! LOL.

Giving up heavy cream in my coffee was one of the hardest things I had to get use to. I now use a fat free half and half.

I began by using a light sour cream, but now I'm using a fat free sour cream. I don't notice it in cooking. I'm making a chicken dish right now in the crock pot using fat free sour cream.

I never was a big butter person. I grew up using margarine, never knowing about the trans fats being so bad for us. Now I use Smart Balance products and I find that I like the taste very much. So does my bf, who's very picky. I also use butter flavored sprays, like Pam, for cooking. Sometimes, not always, I use butter flavored sprays on my food like the "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" sprays. I like them.

You can have regular mayo but you're limited to only 1 Tablespoon, which isn't much. You can have 2 T. of low fat mayo.

These are the guidelines for the first phase of the plan and these don't really change much when phase 2 starts up. Except that you can add artificially sweetened non-fat flavored yogurt (limit to 4 ounces daily and avoid varieties that contain high fructose corn syrup)
Quote:
Sour Cream, light and reduced-fat - 2 TBS
Margarine - Chose those that do not contain Trans Fatty Acids such as Fleishmann's Premium Olive Oil or Smart Balance
Mayonnaise - Regular - 1 TBS
Mayonnaise - Low Fat - 2 TBS (avoid varieties made with high fructose corn syrup)
Salad Dressing - 2 TBS. Use those that contain 3 grams of sugar or less per 2 TBS. Best choices contain canola or olive oil. Low carb salad dressings may also be used if they meet these guidelines.

MILK/DAIRY
(2 cups allowed daily, including low-fat or nonfat plain yogurt)
Low-fat milk (fat-free and 1%)
Fat-free 1/2 & 1/2 (less than 2 tablespoons)
Low-fat plain, vanilla, or sucralose-containing soy milk (4 grams of fat or less per 8 ounce serving). Be sure the product does not contain high fructose corn syrup
1% or fat-free buttermilk
Low-fat or nonfat plain yogurt
I remember low fat diets of the old days and how bad things tasted back then. Have you tried some of the lower fat foods lately? I think they're come a long way in improving the way lower fat items taste now.

Other wise, Sadie, I would just recommend cutting down where you can with the saturated fats. Perhaps you could wean yourself off of some of the items you listed and before you knew it, you'd be using less fats.

Good luck though with whatever route you decide to take.

thanks Piasa, I think my worst one is the cream in coffee, though i don't use alot regularily, i do have a few cups on the weekends. I found a soy creamer a while back that was lowfat/lowcarb that i didn't mind. I may try it again.

Today I had some egg salad with 1 tbsn of mayo, and other than that probably about 1 tsp of butter as far as fats go. I'll try to just keep them down for now. I don't actually mind margarine, and we have a lower fat version here that's trans fat free, and i use becel spray for the pan already.

Not sure if we have smartbalance here..I will have to keep my eye out for it.

What's the name of the soy creamer that you like? I might be interested in trying it. I miss real cream in my coffee, not that I drink it that often. It was more like a treat, and the whole cream made it so good.

I use the brand Smart Balance, but there are others out there. I think Mindy uses one called Earth Balance that she found in a health food store. Benecol is another one.

It looks like you're already trying to cut down on fats. That's a good thing to do. Hopefully things will get going again for you.

Earth Balance is available in my regular grocery store -- usually found in the health food sections. You have to hunt a bit for it, but it sure is worth it. Also I found that Daisy Light sour cream is yummy. And it was not too much of a struggle to switch to part-skim ricotta and part-skim mozarella.

I do not eat any fat-free foods. I still don't like the taste of them. I just make sure that the sat fat of any food containing fat is not more than 6 grams per serving. The Daisy Light sour cream is 2 grams of sat fat, while most other light sour creams are 1.5 grams. That probably is why it tastes good, but it is still well within the guidelines!

You are lucky that you were able to eat cream. It has always stalled me as I found out early on Atkins. I can't bring myself to eat fat-free half & half because I can't find a brand without high frutcose corn syrup or hydrogenated ingredients (which are trans fat, which I will not eat).

If the soy creamer is good I might try that too!!

Do you think I can remember the name of that creamer? LOL i can picture the container too..I'll be going grocery shopping tomorrow so I'll get the name of it, I really don't mind it at all, I'll probably pick some. I actually switched to 'light' cream this week as a step down, it's 5% rather than the 18% i was using. I don't use very much..only in my coffee. I'm still better with the soy creamer though..it's much lower calorie as well.

I've seen earthbalance here at a health food store once...it was $5.99 for the conatiner, so i passed on it!

I got some Land o' Lakes fat free creamer this weekend. It looks like it would taste o.k., but it tastes like water when you put it in your coffee.

For me, it's a small price to pay if I can stay on this plan and lose the weight. There are so many other things that I can eat now, but couldn't on the other one. And I'm getting use to the coffee without the fatty cream in it. I guess you can't have it all, but need to make some trade offs instead.

Actually when I did weight watchers i used to use evaporated milk in my coffee and didn't mind it..though it takes a bit of getting used to ..it's not 'watery'..i think it's fairly low fat (2%) i'll have to check it out.

try the simply smart fat fee half and half. It has the least amount of sugar and I find it to be the creamiest.
