| On SB PHASE 2 & 3, we are supposed to eat bread products with no less than 3 grams of dietary fiber and we are not supposed to ingest High Fructose Corn Syrup(HFCS) and we are supposed to eat 100% whole grain, like 100% whole wheat flour instead of just wheat or unbleached wheat flour. But have you tried looking for these products? They are far and few between. You will not suffer a setback in weight loss if you consume products with high fructose corn syrup, but that ingredient is as harmful as transfats (it is carcenogenic and it dangerously raises your tryglycerides) so it isn't healthy for you. And why is it that breads that are labeled 100% whole grain often have less than 3 grams of dietary fiber in them? Lower dietary fiber may or maynot derail weightloss as the lower the fiber, the more refined and high glycemic the product is. Here's SB official stance on breads: You have to be a sleuth when it comes to reading labels. Terms like multigrain, all-natural, and whole wheat may be clues that the product was made with refined flour, which is high on the glycemic index. Reach instead for products whose labels read "100 percent whole wheat," "100 percent whole grain," or "100 percent whole grain rye" and that serve up at least three grams of fiber per serving. So how about we use this thread to list brands of bread/grains that meet these healthy guidelines. Here are a few that i know of and would love to have others added to this list. Pepperidge Farms Natural 100% Whole Wheat - This company is a trip. They have another 100% Whole Wheat bread that has HFCS so only the one labeled "Natural" doesn't! This bread (the Natural one) has 3 grams of DF. Triscuits - Original Flavor - These 100% whole wheat crackers have the 3gms dietary fiber and don't have HFCS, but watch out for the new ones that are flavored, like the Rosemary one. It has the bad stuff in it! ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums/220-guidelines-bread-products.html Uncle Sam's High Fiber Original Breakfast Cereal - This product is great for dietary fiber count of 10 (and doesn't taste like twigs!!) and no HFCS! I would love to find a 100% Whole Wheat English Muffin without HFCS and 3 grams of dietary fiber. Any body know a brand like that? Let's keep this thread active. We can all add good for us stuff to it and everybody will have more choices for the pantry!!! | ||||||||||

| Great idea for a thread! Maybe we can print it out as a list instead of standing in the grocery store for hours reading labels! How about this one - these are yummy--BTW, HFCS is a transfat? I thought it was a sugar! Thomas' English Muffins Multi-Grain Light No HFCS and 8 grams of DF per serving! (Be sure you get the Light, the regular Multi Grain only has 3 grams of fiber) here's a link so you can check it out Mindy, let me know if I missed something, I hope these pass the test because they are delicious! | |||||||||||

| Great thread mindy! I most likly wont be able to get alot of this stuff here..but you never know. We do have Thomas's eng. muffins here...so I'll have to see if i can find the light brand. We have a bread here called Orowheat Fibre Counting. ..it has 3g per slice and is made with ww flour. The orowheat fibre counting wraps are good as well. I don't know the exact count but I'm sure they do have 3g or more of fibre. I also heard that plain Rye bread is very good, and low glycemic, as is dark rye/pumpernickel, but the regular being best. not sure of the fibre. | ||||||||||

| Real Sourdough bread is acceptable too because of the high acid content, but read the labels carefully. Most of them have regular wheat flour as the first ingredient, which is not good! Arrowhead Mills Steelcut Oats for Oatmeal are acceptable too. | ||||||||||

| I'm not sure about this one. We are supposed to eat 100% whole grain products (I think that is because of the dietary fiber in unprocessed foods). But the first ingredient in these is Enriched wheat flour, which is essentially white flour -- a processed food and not good for us. But if you notice the dietary fiber is real high on these. That is because there is soy fiber and whey protein in them. This is a connundrum. I did see these at a store near me but the first ingredient (largest quantity ingredient) scared me away. I wonder if a processed flour (which is THE Atkins/SB no no) can be considered harmless when you add the other higher fiber ingredients? My whole foodie conscience says it's not good for me. But it would probably accomplish the weight-loss goals. Luv2 eats bread products that aren't entirely whole grain and have HFCS in some of the products she eats, and she is losing a lot of weight! I think she is not as concerned about the by-products and that is certainly ok if that is where you stand. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=220 Oh Mogg's! I feel like I am raining on your parade. I don't want to take your food away. So in this case I think you need to make a personal decision. Are you on the diet strictly for weight loss or are you also banishing controversial ingredients? There are no right or wrong answers. Only what is good for the individual. | ||||||||||

| I noticed that it really sounded like a frankenfood! LOL, but they do taste good! I'm not a really big bread eater so I will probably still buy them on occassion. Normally I like to have an english muffin on Sundays' when we have a nice home cooked sit down breakfast! So I think I'll eat them occassionally, but not on a daily basis. I keep them in the freezer so they will last until I'm ready to eat them anyway. I did try one the other day with a nice hunk of Albacore tuna in it as a sandwich and it tasted yummy! ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=220 But, if there is a better alternative than I would definatley love to know about it! I bet the only way to find one is going to be to get a recipe and order all the stuff from Bob's Red Mill and make our own! I wish I could have gotten some of that dag gone cranberry walnut bread like you have! | |||||||||||
