| Even tho I'm new to this program I already know what I will miss the most. BBQ sauce. We love to cook out but there are NO safe BBQ sauces, I know because I looked. Does anyone have any recipes that will make the family not miss BBQ sauce so much? | ||||||||||

| How about exploring the world of dry rubs instead? I grill a lot but never used BBQ sauce before so never really missed them. There used to be some low carb BBQ sauces out there, but haven't seen any in awhile. I guess I'm weird. I just grill meats with some seasonings and enjoy them that way. I'll see if I can dig up a SB friendly BBQ sauce somewhere if you would like. BTW, the best grill accessory I ever got, was one of those rectanglar grill woks! I grill veggies in there all the time and everyone loves them that way! (note that asparagus and green beans don't work all that well since they tend to try to escape out the round holes in the grill wok, so I still saute those inside!) ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums/5659-help-its-grill-season.html Also someone on another board had a question about a carolina bbq sauce and the ingredients looked good and it only had 1 gm of sugars and none added. Carolina sauces tend to be more vinegary rather than tomato and sugar based, so you might look into the carolina style of bbq, although pork shoulder is not really a lean meat either. | Have been meaning to get one of those rectangular racks for the grill anyhow. I have never tried rubs but will look into them. I have grilled fish before, you dont put BBQ sauce on those anyhow, just marinade. But chicken and ribs have always been family favorites. Haven't told the family there will be no ribs, hate to see grown men cry. | ||||||||||

| I think making your own sauce will be your best option. It is not going to taste just like what you are used to, but that doesn't mean it won't be good. It has been a while since I looked at any of these ingredients, so you would definately need to check it out before using them, but I would guess that something like this would work: 1 cup of no-sugar-added tomato sauce 1/4 cup of vinegar one quartered lemon one quartered onion two tablespoons of mustard 1/8 cup of Splenda Mix this all together well and cook on a low heat for 20 minutes. Strain it and baste on your meats as desired. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/showthread.php?t=5659 Keep in mind this was off the top of my head and is a very adapted version of a BBQ sauce I used to make at a BBQ restaurant I worked at. It is missing some of their key ingredients, but I cannot think of good diet friendly alternatives. You could also consider adding one cup of water to the mixture as well. While that will thin it out considerably, it would make it go further, which means less sauce to interfere with your diet, but it would still give you a little of that taste. Another thing my BIL used to do was add some liquid smoke to the mix. I prefer to use real wood on the grill, but the liquid smoke does add a good flavor. | ||||||||||

| This is in the taste of summer cook book, I tried it on my roommates last week and we all thought it was really good (Im the only one doing SB) 8 oz no salt added tomato sauce 4 oz STRONG brewed coffee 4 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons sugar free syrup black pepper to taste bring it all to a boil and allow to reduce to desired consistency. I never would have put these flavors together but its really good. . . | ||||||||||

| I've used this one a few times and it is pure East Carolina BBQ. The only modification I have had to make is eliminate the brown sugar for splenda. I'm not a big fan of the splenda and have used honey instead. It is delicious. INGREDIENTS (Nutrition) 1 cup white vinegar 1 cup cider vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper 1 tablespoon hot pepper sauce (e.g. Tabasco™), or to taste 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground black pepper | ||||||||||

| You could likely also use agave nectar which is even lower in GI than honey, but does have a different flavor profile, but might be another alternative to give a try at some point! And just as a point of clarification, grilling and true BBQ have virtually nothing in common of course other than perhaps a sauce at the end. | Red, I couldn't agree more. In fact, it took me years to finally stop thinking people were really slow cooking BBQ when in fact they were just grilling. I have come to realize I am in the very, very small minority on this though. When I used to be a pitboy at the BBQ place referenced in my earlier post, it was not uncommon to cook our pork shoulders for 18-24 hours. Mmmm! That was some really good stuff, with or without the sauce.

| I'm just a "griller". But appreciate what goes into real BBQ. I'd need a completely different setup to get into BBQ and just don't likely have the patience at this point. Maybe when (or if) I ever retire! | |||||||||||
