| 6 Reasons why diets fail 1. Diets actually make your fat cells fatter. Trying to starve a fat cell only boosts its ability to store fat, take in new fat, and multiply. Fat cells respond to starvation by holding onto the fat they already have and becoming more aggressive at taking in new fat once the diet is over. When you skip breakfast, for example, your stomach growls and sends a message to your body that it is starving and it immediately begins to store fat for future use. 2. Diets that restrict nutritional intake mess with your metabolism. When you follow a very low calorie diet, you risk starving your body of vital nutrients. This can trigger a complex chain reaction that will eventually tell your metabolism to stop burning so many calories. Then, when you start eating normally again, it takes quite a while for your metabolic rate to get back up to speed. Meanwhile, you start gaining weight - often as much or more than you originally lost. 3. The desire to lose weight NOW is unrealistic. When you don't see the desired results, it's easy to get discouraged and give up. Motivation disappears when your goal is tied only to the end result rather than sound strategy. 4. Something's Missing Diets eliminating an entire food group (such as carbohydrates) and not using the full spectrum of My Pyramid are difficult to follow, and will likely lead to a slip. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself, "Can I eat like this forever?" A successful diet should allow choices from all food groups in moderation, and be something that you can follow for the long term 5. Stress Chronic stress is another contributing factor in slow or difficult weight loss. Stress, whether emotional, mental or physical, pushes the body into “fight or flight” mode. This biological response is the same whether or not the stress is life-threatening. In fact, the body responds with over 2,500 reactions that affect every system including metabolism, blood sugar, hormonal function and appetite (among many, many other things). Consequently, unchecked stress will often cause the body to retain fat, increase cravings, and slow the body’s ability to burn calories. Stress is, undoubtedly, one of the most common reasons diets fail. Dieters with long term successes are proof that the best plans include adequate choices from a wide variety of foods, are flexible and reasonable, and partner with exercise and support from peers. A diet that encourages weight loss slowly over time will help you form better habits to make your diet the beginning of a lifetime of healthy eating! | |||||||||||

| Well I just see a lot of people "fail" with SB too. I'm not sure I agree with this article very much, but it does present a different, and rather harsh, viewpoint. Fat and Happy: Why Most People Don't Diet | LiveScience It's a complex issue. There's a lot of crap and baggage involved for most of us and the solutions are rarely simple. I'm not even sure how or why I was one of the lucky ones who happened to figure it out or why it worked for me and doesn't work for others. I'm glad it did and that I found my way out of that situation. I certainly wish everyone all the best in their own journeys and hope they can find the thing that works for them whether it is SB or something else that clicks for them. | |||||||||||

| I have to agree with the point Red makes. In my opinion, the number one reason diets fail is that the dieter is not committed to stick to it. If you want something different than you've always had, you have to do something different than you have always done. Furthermore, if you approach it as a diet (the way most people use the word), you are most likely not going to retain your weight loss. It is truly a complex subject. I think the most important things are to learn your body, put sound principles into practice (including eating healthy and exercising), and to make the decision that it is not a temporary solution to a lifelong problem. If you want to succeed it takes making the decision that you have to change your lifestyle forever.

| It's a complex issue. There's a lot of crap and baggage involved for most of us and the solutions are rarely simple. ????: South Beach Diet Forums http://www.southbeachdietbulletinboard.com/south-beach-diet-forums/5682-reasons-diets-fail-why-sb-succesful.html I think also Red that there are people with eating disorders that we have to figure in our equation. And I mean the mental kind that requires something outside of diet and exercise. My only disorder was not having a good understanding of food and an appreciation for the healthy variety I am now consuming. That and you and I exercise which is the other half of the equation..because I dont think me and you have an eating disorder. Time and bad habits just took their toll on us. I do agree with that article though for the most part... Diet and exercise—the only proven method for effective, sustained weight loss UMM YEAH!! ya think? The myth that most diets fail has it exactly backward: Instead, most people fail diets. Just about any sensible diet will help a person lose weight. Blaming the diet because the dieter quit is like blaming the unused treadmill for not doing its job. Ok i laughed out loud at that one.... The real solution isn't in fad diets or workout DVDs; the solution is in the mirror. LOL yeah it is... Last edited by no2atkins; 05-08-2009 at 10:49 AM. | |||||||||||
