| Just wanted to let everyone know that I have been pan sauteeing my veggies in Mineral Oil. It has no calories,no fat ,no taste. The goodness of the veggies( especially zucchini ) comes thru with just a little salt. Yes Mineral oil is the same thing our grandmas used to soften the bowels. I find this helps to keep me VERY regular and also is a good way to detox. As mineral oil is a lubricant for the intestine and not a stimulant it is quite healthy and safe to use! I find that it holds up great to high heat. I enjoy olive oil a little , but when I want something light without that strong olive oil flavor Mineral oil is my choice! Good day to all!!! | ||||||||||

| Also remember that the good fats and oils (like olive and canola oils) are good for our heart health and also help nutrient absorption with raw vegetables (like salads). FWIW, if I want a lighter tasting oil, I use the extra light olive oil or canola oil instead of EVOO. There's a reason those are the recommended oils! Just curious but is the reason there are no calories and is such a good laxative because our bodies can't absorb it or process it? If so, you would still need your good fats elsewhere in your meals. The good fats are an integral component of the plan. Last edited by RedRox; 08-04-2008 at 10:58 AM. | |||||||||||

| I agree Red Rox ....The heart healthy oils are irreplacable! We do need them , and I do utilize them!! Mineral oil is not an oil per se, more of just a lubricant or softener for the bowel track. I liken it to using mayo to take off a ring that is too tight. It does the job as a slip agent and is easily washed away. The reason I favor it is because I eat SOOOO many veggies all day, sometimes I just toss them around in it for a little extra texture. If I used that much EVOO I would surely take in too many calories! But YES we should all be taking in adequete amounts of the heart healthy oils.:Love Doctor: | ||||||||||

I am a professional chef and I've never heard of anyone cooking with mineral oil. After all, mineral oil is the main ingredient in Johnson's Baby oil. They add scent to it. I use plain unscented mineral oil for things like removing my makeup and perhaps seasoning a wooden cutting board...using FOOD GRADE mineral oil. I don't think that using this oil could possibly be a good idea for high heat cooking, whether it's food grade or otherwise. Mineral oil is, after all, a petroleum product. Cooking with Vaseline is essentially what you're doing. I'd seriously check with a physician to see if long term exposure to this product is a healthy choice. Edit: Doing some research on this through Google. Mineral oil is not fat free. But it's not absorbed by the body. It also prevents absorption of vitamins A and D. So cooking vegetables in it defeats the purpose. Last edited by Want2BThin; 08-20-2008 at 06:25 PM. | ||||||||||

| Thanks W2BT! It really sounded kind of strange to me, although mineral oil is used as a supplement for humans as a laxative and a stool softener, I can't really imagine cooking with it! Did a little more internet poking around and found this article too. Interactions with Dietary Supplements Vitamins and minerals Mineral oil has interfered with the absorption of many nutrients, including beta-carotene, calcium, phosphorus, potassium, and vitamins A, D, K, and E in some,1 but not all,2 research. Taking mineral oil on an empty stomach may reduce this interference. It makes sense to take a daily multivitamin-mineral supplement two hours before or after mineral oil. It is important to read labels, because many multivitamins do not contain vitamin K or contain inadequate (less than 100 mcg per day) amounts. source: </title> <META NAME="keywords" CONTENT=""> <META NAME="description" CONTENT=""> <script language="JavaScript"> function GetCookie (name) { var arg = name + "="; var strt = document.cookie.indexOf (arg, 0); if (strt == -1) { return ""; } var ennd = do So whereas the healthy oils recommended on SB help with the absorption of some vitamins and nutrients that are fat soluble, mineral oil does not only not help that process, but may hinder it even more. | |||||||||||

| Let's face it, if mineral oil were this great, all food manufacturers would be using it for their low and non-fat products. Lays would be frying their chips in it. We'd see Food Network chefs and restaurants using it. Especially since the ban on trans-fats! But...the FDA would NEVER sanction use of mineral oil in food preparation for human consumption. It's advised that even using mineral oil for constipation be done very sparingly. We have delicious, safe and healthy oils to eat. No reason to poison the body with petroleum. I am concerned for "Crayon" and I hope he/she really rethinks this and discusses it with a health professional. | ||||||||||
