| That term was created by a very creative poster nammed Moggy!! It's a great term and even very fun to say:jester: And I think it hits the nail on the head for many low carbers who may want to switch over to SB but are afraid they will lose the flavor of the foods they've come to love from eating full fat on low carb. Even if you didn't do South Beach, you need to start reducing your calories to get your metabolism revved up again. And if you are eating few calories but most of them from fat, and are stalled, then the fat is stalling you. So in either case, you need to reduce the fats. On low carb, you don't eat a lot of carbs and you know that reducing veggies won't really make a big dent in calorie reduction, so the reduction comes from fat. And if you are eating very few calories and most are from fat (like 65% or more), you will still need to cut the fat but then the diet may not be as satiating since your caloric intake is already low. What we have learned on SB WOE is that cutting fat is not as painful as we feared. For low carbers switching over, we recommend not to start with any fat-free foods and it's not ever necessary to get to that level unless you want to. Also thanks to Splenda, low-fat products that used sugar in the past and now use Splenda to flavor them are no longer awfull tasting!! Regarding fat - We are limited to one tablespoon of fat at lunch and dinner. That can come from olive oil, canola oil, or mayo. Or it might come from 1/3 whole avacado. Full fat mayo and full fat olive oil are allowed. And we are finding that one tablespoon is a sufficient amount for flavor. So we are getting full flavor and automatically cutting the fat calories. Part-skim mozarella and part-skim ricotta have virtually no difference in flavor. 2% Cheddar cheese is about 90% as flavorful if eaten as a snack and 100% as flavorful melted over foods. Cheese by the way is considered a protein and we don't count it towards fat totals. Low fat yogurt is yummy - if mixed with berries or other good fruit and a Splenda. We don't feel denied. Low fat sour cream - Think *Daisy* brand - is still rich and creamy. 1% milk doesn't taste bad at all poured over a whole grain cereal. Not at all. The biggest change is butter. It's not alloweed on SB. But many of us found that Smart Balance or it's health food store sister product, Earth Balance are just as tasty so we are not missing the flavor of this. And in return we are eating oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat, sourdough bread, wild rice and many other grains. Also a sacrifice is that at breakfast we are limiting total fat to one teaspoon. But you would be surprised at how far a teaspoon goes. For me, I'll spray butter spray in a pan, cook an egg with cheese and use the teaspoon to butter up some of my cranberry-walnut whole wheat sourdough bread!! Silk Soy Creamer is made with canola oil so it is rich and satiating in coffee. Others like half - and -half and some even like the fat free creamers out there. And we eat fats when we snack. A handful of nuts or a string cheese stick between meals and more fat is optional at dessert -- my favorite time to sit down with a half-cup of part-skim ricotta with pistachio extract, pistachio nuts and a Splenda!! So for us who have adapted to this WOE after low carbing. We are experiencing joy of expanding our foods with yummy whole grains and though our fat choices are modified, the trade off makes us feel like we are on the plus side of the pro-con list!!! In fact, once you let whole grains back into your life, you probably won't want to leave them out of your diet any longer. | ||||||||||

| Good post Mindy! Thanks. :Hug2: Oh and I did get to taste one of those fake butters you guys are using..I don't know which one it was but it was the Vegan one made with Soybeans. It wasn't too bad actually I was very surprised. I didn't get a chance to cook with it though. I only got a chance to taste it because I work with a woman who is allergic to dairy and she was putting it on her toast one morning and offered me a taste. | |||||||||||

| Earth Balance is the best stuff on earth, I swear it!!! It's made with olive, palm and soy oils. And there is a good for you palm oil vs a bad for you kind and they use the good kind. It won all kinds of "best taste" awards....! Mog, if they have it at Whole Foods, I beg you to try it and I promise I will send you the money for it if you buy it and don't like it. Get the one in the yellow and red tub. Down in Florida it costs $2.29 per tub. The one in the green tub is lower in fat and not quite as tasty. Thank you for the thank you btw | ||||||||||

| Here's what i'm confused about with the fats. That's an added 1 tbsn of fat with your meal correct?. I mean other parts of the meal will have fats themselves as well? IE beef, chicken, dairy etc? I don't think it's the amount of fats, but the type that's more stressed. I think he limits addedfats so you don't get carried away and it helps keep the cals down. Am i making sense? lol Last edited by Sadie147; 04-07-2006 at 04:00 PM. | ||||||||||

| Yes we are only talking about ADDED fats - like added oils, butter substitutes, peanut butter, nuts in general, etc.. and not the fat naturally contained in foods such as meat. Amounts of avacado is limited too due to it's high fat content, but that is a sat fat free food, so this is probably more based on caloric intake. But saturated fat is another story -regardless of the source of fat, oils, mayo, coconut milk, cheese, dairy, etc. the TOTAL fat needs to be at 6 grams or less per serving, so the sat fat within the total fat is kept at levels that are not so detrimental to your health. This is also why you are supposed to eat leaner cuts of meats -- to restrict the intake of sat fat from the meats. Though I don't think we need to worry about meat having 6 grams of fat. It is enough to eat the leaner cuts, limit other foods fat to 6 grams or less and use the recommended serving size of added fats. Does that help?? | ||||||||||

| The SBD is all for getting the right fats. For instance, monounsaturated fats like olive oil and canola oil. And polyunsaturated fats such as other vegetable oils may be used, but they're not as good of choices as olive and canola oils. SB believes it's important to have some fat with your meals, like trans-fat free margarine, mayo or oil. It slows down digestion and helps you to feel fuller. You just don't want to have too much fat because it can stall weight loss. | |||||||||||
